Subject: Trans rear seal.. leaks BAD (kinda long)

Message:
Long story short here...
I drove from California to Wisconsin, in Utah, my truck starts doing some crazy stuff (coming out of OD, and 3rd at times on the freeway) Pulled over for gas and saw trans fluid ALL over the belly of the truck, up on the tailgate.. everywhere. In the middle of no where, its Denver or bust to stay with some relatives while it gets fixed. Found a k-mart and dumped in about 8 quarts in 500 miles. Took it to a dealer in denver, replaced the "rear output seal". drove it back to the house, all is well it seems, and we left early the next morning for the other half of our trip. 200 miles after denver, it starts acting funny again. i was willing to accept maybe i fried some internals and thats just how its gonna act now. NO.. looked under the truck, LEAKING AGAIN! stopped 300 miles after denver in some podunk county dealership for them to tell me there is no warranty on seals, not even for 300 miles! and that they didnt have a seal or possibly a bearing causing the seal to go bad. So he told me as long as i keep fluid in there, its gonna leak like a mofo, but it'll get me home. After 100 bucks worth of tranny fluid, 1000 miles later, 250 bucks on a new/already bad seal, and a bed full of empty bottles, I made it home and made an appointment for tomorrow. I lowered the truck 2/3, and they said that was the reason it went bad, but that was over 30,000 miles ago! does it take that long?.. im furious that i had spent 250 and it didnt fix the problem. i have to drive the truck to my permanent duty station in NC in 2 weeks. i guess this post is more of me just venting, but what do you guys figure i can do about this crap?... do you think the dealer here will more than likely "help" me out seeing as my receipt for repairs was only 2 days ago? anyone else have the rear seal/bearing go bad?

Man you got screwed. I used to have a 98 and the rear seal leaked so I bought one for 10 bucks and replaced it myself in about an hour and now it's all good. Sorry to hear about this. You might check to make sure the seal was driven completely into the bore and have the dealer check the pinion angle.

check to see if output shaft thrust bearing is pushing out on rear seal, have seen this a couple of times at dealership, just tap back into place
and secure by scoring housing, then install new seal.

the new dealer says the drive shaft is out of round, needs new shaft, ujoints, yoke. said the vibration (i never noticed one) is putting a knick in the seal and having fluid leak out. im pretty sure i trust the new dealership, they test extensively before they take or reccomend a course of action. that, and along with consistent phone calls with the outcomes, and what theyve found, and frequent visits from me to see that theyre not BSing me, hopefully this fixes the problem. it HAS to, its either fix the truck, or park it here and buy a plane ticket, but its North Carolina or Bust for me on the 29th.

I'm having the same problem now...tranny leak. I had the pan tightened and the mechanic said it was a sure fix. Wrong. Leaking bad now. Going to replace the seal myself and see what happens. Hopefully that's it.
