Subject: New 4.7L TB vs Air intake IP: Logged
Message: Was wondering if a TB upgrade to either the stock 68mm or aftermarket 70mm TB would have trouble fitting to either an Intense air or new K&N air intake(if/when it comes out). I was hoping Intense air would make a gen III for the 4.7L since it supposedly uses a ram air cone attached to the side of the radiator where the "rubber cover" is removed & utilizes an enclosed canister for better heat shielding before entering the TB. Any body, anybody... ?

Message: For anyone who is interested, I recently found out the 68mm stock TB that comes with the 2001 dakotas does indeed fit with the z-tube.

Message: Just talked to several dealers about getting a 68mm TB to swap out with my stock 65mm TB. The list price is $224 & the best quote was for $200. The p/n is 53013163AB. The dealers are telling me the oring for 2001+ is no longer available p/n is 83503642. Do I need it or is it integrated into the 68mm TB??? I couldn't get an answer out of any of them. I was advised to call Chrysler @ 800-84-MOPAR & when doing so got lost in a myriad of options all of which require you to enter your VIN/PIN/GIN/First of KIN -hehe before proceeding, I wasn't able to get a warm body on the line! Anybody have any info on this "ORING" issue??

Message: Doug, I have already been down this same road. I have a 2000 (65mm) truck, and I got a 68mm TB for about $150, from the dealer. I sent both "stock" TB's to Hughes engines for flow bench testing. Hughes found that the 68mm TB flowed very little more air than the 65mm TB (not worth the money)., however Hughes was able to work my 68mm TB enough to get a 20% flow increase over the 65mm TB. If you'd like more info, email me off list.

Message: Thanks for the info Matt. Also found out from Matt that the "oring" is not an issue when buying the stock 68mm TB since the 65mm TB oring is embedded into the manifold & thus is reusable for the new 68mm TB.

Matt-
I'm confused.... Did Hughes work on your 65mm til it flowed 20% better or did they work on the 68mm that you sent them? I guess what I want to know is, should I look for the 2000 TB core in the junkyard or should I buy a 2001 TB from Dodge as my core? Or should I just call Hughes? Ack!

Message: Hughes engines actually worked on both TB's!! haa haa
1st, they did my 65mm TB, before the 2001 production year. So I did'nt know about the 68mm TB's at that time. Hughes had my 65mm flowing 13% more.
2nd, I found out about the 68mm TB, so I ordered one, shipped it direct from the dealer to Hughes engines, and he flow benched "stock" to compare to the stock 65mm. Found out it was'nt that much better, stock vs stock. The Hughes did their stage I to the 68mm TB and picked up an additional 7%, so the 68mm TB Stage I flows 20% better than a stock 65mm TB. Clear as mud?? he hee. I'm currently running the Stage I 68, and it is much better than a stock 65, but after running the Billet 69mm, from F&B!! woo hoo, no comparison!
To be honest, I'd wait for the F&B billet 69-71mm TB, I have tested it, and it rocks!! No the Z-tube wont work with the billet unit, but there are other "homemade" options that you can do. I've been running a homemade air-intake for almost 2 years, and it makes plenty of power, and cost alot less.
I've spent about $400 bucks on 2 Mod'd TB's from Hughes, and now they seem to be inferior to the F&B 69mm TB, however the F&B TB will be more than a Hughes unit. Save your money, get an F&B Billet TB, you won't be dissapointed, Ask Doug how it looks, its very impressive!!

Matt-
Some more questions.....
1. If the coupler between the Z-Tube & the TB is just rubber hose (it is right?), then why wouldn't it just stretch over the mouth of the new F&B?
2. Obviously, I haven't seen a photo of the F&B, so where can I see that?
3. Where can I see your home-brew intake tube?
4. Do me a favor (since you've seen all the F&B and z-tube stuff) and look at volantperformance.com....... Will their tube hook up to the F&B? The coupler jsut looks like rubber w/ hose clamps as well......
5. How much will the F&B be?
How's that for curiousity? Hah!
I'll make it Richmond (to see my brother) before summer's over. Hopefully, I'll have all this stuff strapped on, and we can test a Club Cab w/ no traction-aid against a Reg Cab with CalTracs bars. I think I know how it'll come out.

Message: Alex, you are right,
1. the rubber coupler should stretch to fit the Billet TB. The Billet TB OD is approx 4" +/-. I think the stock TB is around 3" +/- (don't hold me to those figures, but I think that is about right) Anyway, its possible the coupler could stretch it.
2./3. Send me your email addy, and I'd be glad to send the photos. matt_barret@earthtech.com
4. The Volant tube looks like it should fit, if you used a different dia. coupler, it should work fine. They make those couplers in all different sizes.
5. Cost, not sure yet, but it won't be cheap. I don't have a good feel for the price yet, but it's safe to say more than 250, but less than 500. I know thats a broad range, but I just don't have any idea yet.
