Subject: K&N vs Amsoil Airflow
IP: Logged

Message:
I just received emails from both K&N and Amsoil regarding the airflow specs of their filters for a 2001 5.9L Dakota QC. Here's what they sent me:

K&N = 478 cfm @ 1.5" of water pressure
Amsoil = 200 cfm @ 0.25" water pressure (approx 320 cfm @ 1.5" water pressure)

Based on the manufacturers flow data, it appears that at the same pressure the K&N flows much more air than the Amsoil foam filter. Is there anything I'm missing in that comparison?

Thanks!

I was hoping others would post, but since nobody did I will add this:

I am willing to concede some shapes of K&N flow better
than some Amsoil filters, but for the most part
they are fairly close.

I don't understand how you arrived at:

"200 cfm @ 0.25" water pressure = (approx 320 cfm @ 1.5" water pressure)?"

Are both these figures from Amsoil or is the part in parenthesis calculated by you?

Again .... FILTRATION !!!!! FILTRATION !!!!!

Not just FLOW !!!!!

All the data I recieved was from K&N and from Amsoil. I made no extrapolations on my own (the 320cfm came from Amsoil also).

I 100% understand the flow is not the only issue. Filtration is also huge.

I have a 5.9L 2001 QC (or will soon once it's fixed). It was a wrecked truck that we salvaged. I wasn't hoping for the 5.9L but I got what I got. So now I'm looking at the simple things I can do to help improve the MPG. The air filter seemed a pretty obvious starting point. In the end, I know it probably doesn't matter much at all what I put in there.

I'm planning to mod the air intake to make it similar to an Intense performance Stage III. Just to see what happens.

Thanks for the feedback Amsoilsponsor! Much appreciated.

Amsoildealer, I have researched amsoil products to an extent, and am interested in using the foam element on my K&N filter. I'm not too thrilled about the dirt that the K&N may not trap, so can the foam element be bought and made to fit a K&N FIPK filter? I was thinking of surrounding the cone filter with the foam.

What is the airflow for a stock filter? Is the Amsoil at least better than the stock filter?

TECH,

If you are using K&N filters, I would suggest K&N foam for a "perfect" fit.
---------------------------------

For the 2001 5.9 Dakota, here are the Amsoil Part #'s:

Amsoil Oil Filter # SDF42
Amsoil Air Filter # TS29
---------------------------------

Jes,

I don't have readily available the flow #'s for OEM, so that I can compare with Amsoil. I'll see what I can do and get back with you.

Great -- thanks Steven. If the Amsoil is at least 10% better flow than OEM with as good or better filtration, I think that's the way I'm gonna go. Thanks for the reply.

TECH,

Here is what you need for your K&N.
If you do a search on this site for "K&N Airforce", I am certain you will find additional helpful information.

K&N Airforce Pre-Cleaner

Hope this helps.

Note: Not everything I do and say is Amsoil. :-)

--------------------------------------------------

Jes,

I am still waiting for the flow #'s for the OEM for comparison.

I guess this is as good of an opportunity I will get to ask this question: Are there any websites, or other information sources, dedicated to the comparison of performance parts (of all kinds) to each other as well as compared to OEM? My guess is NO simply because that would be something that would be talked regularly about if it existed.
Many websites offer their own comparisons for parts they sell. I always find myself being a bit leery of their numbers and data.

If anyone has a Mopar Airfilter it has the flow and pressure drop specs on it. Of course, it will be tough to relate it to the other data since I think the pressure @ the stated airflow on the filter is only .035 Bar or something. But I did see it on the actual filter element itself.

I think Im leaning toward Amsoil for the increased airflow but for the better filtration.
