Anyone know of any good mods for a 2000 2.7 Concorde? This thing could be a real fine piece with the right equipment.

Hi Butchnut, our family car is the 2000 Intrepid with the 2.7 and I have been slow to post because I don’t have much information. At 60k miles I just replaced the sparkplugs with new Champions from AutoZone, for 2 dollar plugs I could not see the point in running them until 100k. Performance is smoother and I will be checking gas mileage. I am under the impression that a high flow air filter will improve performance but so much of this engine is already “tuned” compared to conventional engines. If you don’t have the variable intake manifold, these are supposed to give an additional 5 hp, but $250 for a plastic intake manifold and some doubt if the car’s ECM would take a reflash to recognize the change has prevented me from trying it. With these engines come some words of caution. The 2.7 has a bad reputation with some owners and the repair industry. When someone designs an engine in CAD they should have spent a few years working on cars before being allowed to submit designs for production. The water pump for this engine is buried behind the timing chain in the middle of the block. The chain drives the pulley and seals separate the coolant from the oil. Ours failed around 50k miles and was a pain to replace. It seems that the seals deteriorate and allow coolant to escape from the weep holes and it is hard to pinpoint, I thought at first it was a bad thermostat housing and spent a few hours swearing at it. If this goes undetected, there have been instances where coolant has bypassed the seals and wiped out the engine bearings. Whoever designed this gets an “F” and should have their engineering degree pulled and their college should be labeled as a school that graduates idiots. I’m off my soapbox now but keep an eye on your coolant and hopefully you never have this problem. We purchased this car used and it only had the 3year 36k warranty, so the repair was on me. I also know that the transmission fluid should be changed with +4 type fluid every 50k to prevent problems. I have heard that the Prowler gears will give these cars a lower numerical gear ratio but I have not been willing to take ours apart. The LH guys have a website, http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/ and they may offer a little more help, post back with your mods, I’m still learning on this car.
