I am planning on moving my IAT sensor when I get my intake installed. How do you extend the wires? I think I know I just don't want to take any risks of doing it wrong. Thanks for your help.

You'll need to clip the wires about 3 inches or so back from the IAT plug connector. Disconnect the negative lead of your battery first! This'll give you enough to trim and leave some to spare in case you mess up and need to do it over. You only need to trim about 3/8" worth of jacket off each wire to expose the inside conductors.

Get some automotive wire of the same gauge...it'd be nice if you could also get something close to the same color, but that's not important. Figure out where you want to relocate the IAT at, then take the new wire and string it out along the route that you want to take back to the IAT wires that are still in the loom. Cut the new wires to that length.

Clear another 3/8" of jacket off the new wires, twist one wire to each IAT conductor, and solder them together. I heartily recommend placing a piece of HEAT SHRINK tubing over the solder connection, NOT electrical tape. You can get the heat shrink at Radio Shack or an electronics supply store. Apply heat from a match or heat gun, and it'll shrink down and seal the connection. Electrical tape looks crappy and just falls off in 2 weeks.

Dress the new wires along the route you want to take back to the cut wires, and zip tie them to keep them secure and out of the way. Pay attention to which wire is connected to which wire on the IAT connector! Place another piece of heat shrink over each wire. Trim the other ends of the cut wires and connect the corresponding wires together like before. Heat shrink them, and tie them down, making sure that there's no wire exposed and they're not shorting out to anything that's metal (grounded). Reconnect your battery. That should do it...

Does anyone know what gauge the wires are on the IAT sensor? I'm not to familiar with automotive soldering. Is there a certain type of solder and solder gun that should be used? The only solder I'm familiar with is the resin solder that I get from radio shack that I use to solder electronics (guitars, for example).

Thanks!!!

the radio shack solder isn't too weak with regards to the engine heat and melting?

The wire on my IAT was either a 22 or 24 ga on my '99. 14 ga is overkill. Don't be worried about heat, it takes over 1000deg to melt silver solder, which is what you should use for anything that requires conductivity. I covered the wire with split loom and wire tied it and looks like it came from the factory that way. Oh, and by the way I used 18 ga speaker wire, so you don't have to be picky as long as it's at least as large as what's on there.

Thanks, Timberwolf, for the advice. Is there a certain type of Silver solder (with regards to weight and strength) or can I just get regular old silver solder at Radio Shack and use it with my soldering iron?

Thanks!!!

The size of the IAT wiring for the 00-03 4.7L motors is 20 gauge. You don't need to relocate the IAT if you build the IAT adjuster (which applies to all Magnum nomenclature engines; (92-up).

The wire size isn't that critical...it doesn't carry much current, so 20 gauge is fine. The solder you buy at Radio Shack or any electronic parts store is OK...60/40 lead/tin mix, rosin core. If you can find a wire with a high temp insulating jacket, like automotive wire, that'd be better. I had to practically rebuild the distributor wiring harness on my daughter's '90 Honda Accord due to the original wires cracking and breaking, and I used this kind of wire, no problem. Spliced it in, sealed it with shrink on both ends, works fine...I've been an electronics tech for 25 years, so I've got some experience with this stuff. Just be careful, you'll be OK.

Great!!! I have some 18 guage wire, solder and shrink wrap at home. This should work, I believe. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the 18 and 20 guage. Since the sensor doesn't carry much current then I should be ok. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for all your advice and help.

That will work fine Phil..The 18 will carry more current than the 20. You will be fine with that set up. I am in the process of building the IAT adjuster. I have all the parts on hand I just need to sit down and put it together.
Thanks
Buck

The IAT adjuster works pretty darn well, although I have yet to do a total dyno work up on it. I did install an Air/Fuel gauge along with my IAT adjuster and use that as a rough adjustment setting...

Yea I relocated my IAT and really noticed a differance. I am looking for Cold air kit for my 95 V-6. when I get (or make)one I will move my IAT back to the manifold and use the adjuster.
