Subject: Cut-Out, Don't know the SIZE?! IP: Logged
Message: Sorry guys, I am a girl and of course I don't know much about cars/trucks. I want to buy a cut out off of summit Racing but I don't know which size I should get or what size I need to get. I have a 97 Dodge dakota CC it's a 5.2 It has the 40 series flowmaster with the single exit out the passenger side. Do I get the 3' or the 2 1/2'? Or does it really matter?? Please help!

Message: I also have a '97 5.2, reg. cab, and a 50 series Flowmaster; the stock pipe was used, and the muff is 3" in/out. So...I would assume the cutout should also be 3". Just don't shoot me if it's not. :D

Message: Idiot.... Yea anyway. Elaine, take it to a custom exhaust shop and have them cross it over after the muffler into (2 pipes 2.5" wide straight out the back) and have them putt 3" chrome cut tips on it.

Message: Lol, out of all these posts only like 2 helped me! I called who put my exhaust on and he told me to just go measure it. Believe it or not but they won't put it on before the cat! Man that sucks. Does it still sound good after the cat?

Message: After the catalytic converter is basically a straight pipe with a cat. If you like the sound of just one pipe inside your cab, it will sound good. Exhaust cutouts arent made to sound good, they are made for track use only and help performance

Message: Sorry about the previous post if I sounded demanding. The thing is, DYNOMAX is just as good if not better than FlowMaster, yet costs 1/4th the price. I know this from experience I have got from my friend that works at a custom exhaust shop. They flow just as well. But just about everyone that tried DYNOMAX mufflers says they sound much better than flomasters. Your really paying for a name when you get a brand like F.M...... You always want the cat first then Muffler

Message: Cutouts are pointless on a street vehicle. They're too damn loud in the open position, & they can act as a flow/sonic restriction in the closed (muffled) position. A poorly sized or placed cutout will slow the truck down. Don't waste your money. You'll only attract the attention of law enforcement and toothless rednecks.
Its been proven on chassis dynos and track results that a single 3" exhaust system with either a Flowmaster 40 series or Dynomax super turbo will provide the most streetable power at a lower sound level than cutouts, & will support additional mods to the engine.
good luck

Message: It just my exhuast is quiet. I don't want to buy a whole new exhaust because I may be getting rid of my truck in the next 6-12 months. I Don't mind paying 40 bucks and having something put on. I am going to wait to get MBRP exhuast for my new truck. So is a cutout before the cat not good? Should I just have them put it on after?

Message: Technically according to federal law, a cutout before the cat converter is illegal, because it defeats (bypasses) the converter.
Now a cutout behind the converter may be legal in some states. The sound will be just as loud behind the converter, as the monolith honeycomb style converters used nowadays are much less restrictive/muffling than the old pellet bed style of converter used in the '80s.
Don't get me wrong, loud engines are fun. Duals, large singles, glasspacks, straight pipes, X-overs, H-pipes, dumps, cutouts, custom mufflers, etc all have their place. Just depends on the application.
If you want to put a cutout in front of the muffler, stock diameter of pipe between converter and muffler on most 5.2L V8 dakotas was 2.5". Let us know how it sounds and runs uncorked.

Message: Elaine, it sounds like you are looking for a certain level of sound from your exhaust. My reccommendation is to cut the muffler completely out of the system and replace it with a piece of straight pipe. My bet is that it will be even cheaper than the cut-out. Then you won't have to crawl up under the truck to make it loud, you won't have to worry about the catalytic converter, and you won't have to wire up an electric cut-out.
Trust me, I've heard a 5.2 with no muffler (but the rest of the exhaust in place) and it sounds mean. As a matter of fact, it was a girl driving that particular truck as well. She had it at Atlanta Dragway. Try that method first, and see if you dont' like it better.

Message: Well, being at the Dragway with the paper dealer tags on it and 1250 miles on the odometer, I bet there was no aftermarket cam in it.
But whatever you need to say to make yourself feel better.....
