Subject: Need help! with modded 97 5.2L
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 5.2L 2wd auto that has a 206/210 duration Comp Cams with M-1 intake, Mopar headers and Gibson cat back. The motor runs great above 3000 rpm and is still pulling strong at rpm cutoff. I have a few questions: Is there a M/P computer available for the 97 5.2L auto?? If not will any other computer ex: 97Ram or 4x4 that will work?? If not can the computer be modified to raise the shift points and rpm cutoff?? Will the Hypertech programmer accomplish this??

i think i have the same cam as you minus the intake. Is the lift 480/512 and what rockers do you have? I have the 1.7's. Did you change the stock valve springs? I also have the Hypertech and yes it does let you rev the hell out of it. I shift out at about 5500/5600 rpms. Is your truck reg cab and what gears do you have? Sorry about all the questions but I just wanna know if I'm runnin like I should. Before the Hypertech and spring change I ran a 14.6 at 93mph cutting out and spinning. Haven't been back to see what it does now. Let me know!

Thats the same cam except I had mind ground on 110 degree centers(installed 4 degrees advanced on 106)to sharpen the torque generation. I have the 1.6 roller rockers with the D/C springs and retainers. It's a 97 reg cab 4x2 with 3.92 rear axle. We don't have a 1/4 mile track around here, only 1/8 mile. I haven't run it yet because I want to get the rpm up to keep the motor in the powerband better, it drops out of the "band" slightly when it shifts now. Can you modify the shift points with the hypertech??

Can't modify the shift points with the hypertech. Can adjust speed limiter and rev limiter.

Dak318, what are you doing for traction? I can't get any in first gear at the track. I know I should run slicks but don't have access to them. And I don't race enough to justify buying them.

cudanut ... there is an MP PCM for the 97 5.2L, 4x2, auto. but it's the CA version. The Fed version did not get by EPA. I'm using it on the streets but not on the track. To get CARB approval, the pcm was programmed to drastically retard timing at the shift points while timing except at the shift points are a little more than the stock pcm.

That pcm does not sound like it will help...It seems to bog a little on the shift from 1st to 2nd now. But its shifting at about 4800 and the motor wants more rpm. I can shift manually but thats a pain in the ass in everyday driving. I want it to shift about 5500-5700 in auto. Mine does not spin much right now, I guess the mild torque loss helps in that department....ticats, what cam are u using??

I had the R/T cam first and it was not much better than the stock 5.2L cam. Whats the powerband of the Hughes cam??

Hughes advertises the 1418 powerband at 2000 - 5800. It depends on what other mods there are. My peak hp rpm is at about 5800 and my pear torque rpm is about 4600. You can increase the torque in the bottom end by advancing the cam 4* from the recommended 111* centerline up or back off on the valve lash a little. Personally, I would say that Hughes advertised low end starting at 2000 is quite a bit off.

red97kota ... I was able to run 14.31 with the RT cam (older version). As I said, I suppose it depends on what other mods complement it (for me, F&B stage 1 tb, M1 4bbl, MP valvesprings/pushrods, Gibson, Transgo, 3.92 gears), diy ported heads, etc.) . My RT cam timing was also advanced to 106* from the recommended (I believe) 109*.
