Subject: Another Accel coil failure. IP: Logged
Message: My second Accel coil (140021) went bad after less than 6 months. The first one only lasted slighty less than a year. At least this one is within warranty. I may ask for my money back rather than a replacement.
Has anyone else had this much bad luck with coils? (Accel or others) I don't know if I ever had a coil go bad before these, except on my old Ford tractor!
I am runnning an MSD 6a. After the first coil went bad, I sent my MSD back to the factory and had it checked out. There was no problem with the MSD unit.
The factory coil mount is relatively close to the exhaust headers. Could the coil be getting too hot and failing? Maybe I should re locate the coil. However, I like the look and convienience of the factory mount.
Maybe I should try the MSD replacement style coil. It produces slightly less voltage than the Accel but maybe it will last longer.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bill

Message: It's the coil! I've used Accel on many different cars in many different locations and they all fail! I still use them because they make a hotter spark than any of the others I've tried. I've ran them on VW's, 68 Big Block Chargers, 72 & 75 Impalas, 67 D100 w/318, 87 Turbo Shadow, 92-95 5.2L Dak and most of them quit within a year and it's not due to heat. The 350 SB chevy mounts on top of the distributer. I think vibration has more to do with it than heat. Also, if your running the huge supercoil do not mount it side ways or upside down. I actually got to speak with an Accel technician back in 1990 and he said the oil inside the supercoil leaks into the windings and shorts out the coil if you mount it on the side. I don't see what difference it makes myself. I tried his advice and I went from getting 6 months out of a coil to getting 14 months. Bottom line, get a spare and put it in the glove box or get an MSD Blaster. It's almost as hot as the Accel and will out last the original equipment.

Message: Mine is still going. Maybe it's the MSD set up. You could try Accel 300+ ignition system and see if that works better. Good luck.

Message: I've had my Accel for almost two years now..never had a problem. I'm like the other guys it might be the mixture of MSD and Accel..however I just changed the coil only, I didn't replace the whole ignition. So, good luck

Message: Same thing here. Been using the accel coil that mounts in the stock location on my 96 SLT V8 for a couple of years now, no probs. The accel coil windings may overheat from the MSD's capacitive discharge/multistrike setup.
Only prob Ive had is that cheap plugwires will cause crossfire with this accel coil.

Message: Used to race sevral different types of cars. Used Accel in all of them, and each time I had coil problems. I finally switched the entire ignition systems to Mallory on one car and MSD on another, neither suffered another ignition related failure. Idiotically, I am currently using an Accel coil on my Dak, I'll soon be changing over to MSD, when they get the plug in adapter situation sorted out. I final word of advice. NEVER USE ACCEL PLUGS!!!!

Message: For my money MSD is the only way to go. I never had much luck with Accel especially their "Super Coil" and their absolute crap spark plugs.

| Another Coil or what? IP: Logged
Message: I have a CraneCams HI-6 capacity discharge ignition, MSD Coil, and MSD Distributor. After I start the car and let it run for 15 minutes or so, it turns off. I can not turn it on right away. I will wait 30 minutes and the car starts up again like nothing is happening to it. When the car turns off I've checked the coil and it is hot. Should I change the coil or does anybody know about this symptoms. Appreciate your help. Thanks

Message: Had the jacobs torquer whatever system on my 95 cherokee, trigger or coil went. Took it off, went with just an accel coil, it went bad. Fortunately I kept my stock coil through all of this and it has 167,000 on it and still going strong!

Message: You may want to try a Bosch Mercedes Benz coil from a wrecking yard. Try to find a V8 mercedes and grab the coil. The damn things last forever and put out a spark that will blow your balls off.
You will be pleasently surprised with the Mercedes coil. It is twice the size of the stock Mopar coil and is a bit heavy. Mount it on the fender or firewall. It also looks almost identical to the Mopar unit, just bigger. Comes with it's own bracket. Cut the harness off of the Mercedes so you can splice it into the original Dak harness.

Message: I have just changed out the accel coil on my Jeep Cherokee on the side of the road because it was as far as it would take me. The coil would break down and quit after it got hot, and would only do it in the summer when the temperature was at its highest. Vibration had nothing to do with mine dying because I off road frequently. Was installed in stock location and used factory harness. Could feel a difference, however, in torque when replaced with stock. Just have to get over it, I guess.
