Subject: 4.7 timing gear adjustment??? Help!! IP: Logged
Message: Hey I posted the problem with the HO cams. I think that the chains moved on the spockets when they were off of the cams. How can I check this or move them back? How do I know when the chain is on the right spot on the gear? Looks like my truck might be going to the dealer!!

Message: If the harmonic dampner has a TDC mark - align that. With both sprockets off, the v8 on the cam sprockets needs to be in the 12 oclock position (chain doesn't matter as long as the cams are right. You should have marked the cahin links with paint opn either side of the "v8" before you pulled it apart (instructions I had said to do that)- that way there is no question when you put it back. The cam chain didn't fall back in the motor and over extend the tensioner plunger did it?

Message: ahhh...I'm not too sure about the chain not making a difference there bud. If the chain slipped a tooth then the whole thing is out of time regardless of the cam spocket.

Message: All I had to was point the timing mark on the balancer toward the #1 cylinder then set the gears so that the V8 marks point straight up!

Message: Glad to hear the problem is fixed. Jetskier - As far as the cam chain -it's just a chain. You can push or pull it anyway you want as long as both cams are in the right position (V8 symbol at 12' o'clock) AND in proper relation to the crank (TDC #1) when you put it back on it. If there is something else in the 4.7 engine that is driven off the chain and needs alignment, please let me know. Thanks! Forum is a good source for knowledge.

Message: That's what I meant. The chain is driven off the crank. So the cams (and sprokets) need to be in relation. If it slipped a tooth the the crank to cam relation is different. Yes.....??
