Subject: R/T Tranny Shift Points IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys....
It's been quite some time since I've been on here. I've got a question for a tranny buff.
When I hold her at WOT 1st-2nd shifts at about 5k, 2nd-3rd shifts at 4k (sometimes 3.5k), and 3rd-OD shifts at about 4k.
My mods include: Homemade K&N pipe, relocated AIT, Mopar Performance PCM, TPS @ 0.76V, Headers, No Kittycat, Original Series-40 3" Flowmaster, & 180 stat.
I've had the tranny rebuilt. I bought the truck with 30k miles. It's a `99 R/T CC. I bet the previous owner was pretty hard on the factory tranny. It has 54k miles on it now. Still runs absolutely great, just doesn't shift worth a dern. My tranny guy put a mild shift kit in it. Upped the gov pressure and put in a hard to find part that is a common upgrade to a GM or Ford auto-tranny. I don't recall the exact name but it is the lever that pushes the rod in the tranny that ultimately makes the shift. It has a modified ratio.
Even after this the turkey still shifts at the wack RPM's. 1st-2nd is the only good shift and at WOT it almost always kicks the bed a foot to the side. I know the Mopar PCM was supposed to raise the shift points but I don't see it.
What should I do? Get the computer re-flashed to directly modify the shift-point corrections?
Please help. Your comments are appreciated.

Message: Sounds easy enough but it has already been tinkered with. Any tighter and it tried to downshift to 2nd at 80+MPH. No bueno. My tranny guy is convinced that it is within the electronics.
Thanks for the input.....

Message: my 2000 r/t does the same thing, shifts out of 1'st at 5-5200 rpm at wot, then shifts 2-3 at 4500 rpm. I've got the mp pcm also and I recall when I installed it the truck would 2-3 shift around 5200 rpms. I'm under the impression that the pcm controls the shift points at wot also, otherwise whats the point of installing the performance pcm? Anyway I've read posts on this problem and couldn't find any solutions to this early shift problem, but obviously you and I are not the only ones experencing this. Thought about trying a new tps but I did'nt want to spend the money if the tps is not the problem. I'm going to put the stock pcm back in and see were the 2-3 shift occurs...

Message: For all with the problem:
I have a similar problem because of similar mods; tranny shifts the 2-3 at 4K. I considered trying to fix the problem, but then realized it's easier and cheaper to shift the 2-3 manually. It not like it's hard to drop the shifter down a step or two for the gear you want. I'm usually only above 4K when I'm racing so manually shifting the truck is preferred (mopar pcm). This is what has worked on my truck for the last 25K miles!

Message: But the point is you shouldn't have to shift manually. I race everytime I enter the George Bush Turnpike.... I have a similar problem.

Message: Well ladies and gentlemen. I have the same problem. 44re tranny and it shift like sh1t. If i shift it manually, it is a beast, but on it's own from 2-3 it falls on it's face and then it starts to pick up the power a sec or so later and then more power. This has cost me several races.
? for you all ? when your cruising at a low speed and stomp it, does it down shift immediately, and also the higher speed your driving, does it take longer for it to downshift?
Thanks for the input...
Later,
FROG

Message: BillyBob.... i also have the Mopar PCM. It is supposed to change the shift points up a little more than stock... it does other stuff too like shut off your A/C @ WOT. My TPS has been mod'd to 0.76v which under light accel from a light causes the truck to delay the shifts and keep your RPM band a bit higher than usual.
"This is under light throtle taking off from a light like everyone else... ;)"
Example on my rig:
1st-2nd @ 13 MPH
2nd-3rd @ 30 MPH
3rd-4th @ 45 MPH
That was the result of uping my TPS voltage from stock to 0.76 volts.
-----
Buvis.... what color is your R/T... I can be seen frequently on the George Bush Turnpike hauling beyond 100MPH in short bursts.
-----
FROG.... at crusing speed is doesn't "immediately" downshift unless you slam the gas quick and sharp. At higher speeds it's like flipping a coin to decide if it is going to downshift quick or even at all.
---------
THIS IS A EXPLAINATION OF THE MOPAR PCM I FOUND.
Mopar Performance PCM 96-2000. This controller adds spark, fuel, moves the rev limiter to 6000 rpm, removes the speed limiter, has a higher initial spark curve, moves the shift points from 4800 to 5200 and locks out the AC compressor under WOT.
