Subject: HO Cam Help! IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys I have had my HO cams and intake manifold for about a week, I need to get them installed, my local shop wants 600 dollars, and tell me they will need my truck for 3 days, I am hoping there is someone who lives in SOCAL that has done the install, that could help me do the install myself, I am willing to pay them. I would really appreciate gaining some more knowledge on my truck. Thanks

Message: If you do a search on Google or this forum you will find a fountain of information from guys that have done this install.
I have not made the change yet, but plan too, I have found PDF files that have very good step by step instructions, also there are guys that have devoted web pages with step by step pictures of the install.
Take an hour and do some research and I think you will find that it should be a very easy install even for someone not mechanically inclined.
One bit of info that I have noticed is that the specialized tool can help save a lot of effort and add piece of mind to lock the timing chain.

Message: 3 DAYS! The install by a trained tech with the correct tools shouldn't take much more than 3 hours. It took my cousin, a Dodge tech, under 2.5 hours to do the cams plus remove and clean the throttle body. The intake shouldn't add much more time - maybe a half hour. Four hours tops for the whole shebang.

My buddy Jack is all set to go on that install. About 1/2 of what you were quoted.
He's available this week (what's left of it).

Message: For those that have done the work, how much of the crap on top of the motor needs to come out?
Can you shoe-horn the valve covers off without removeing AC and heater plumbing, wires, lines, etc?
The 4.7 engine compartment is better than most new cars, but it still looks like a mess to me. (used to working on old 350's or 302's)

Message: You'll need to pull intake plumbing, unclip most wiring and vacuum hoses, and pivot the power steering pump out of the way. We also unbolted the AC canister bracket from the fire wall and loosened the bolts to the power brake booster to get room to wiggle the valve covers out - that's the trickiest part. No need to disconnect any coolant hoses or AC lines. I just did it today - a bit of a hassle, but you'll be glad you did it. We forgot to reconnect a sensor connection by the power steering pump, that's what I found looking for why the engine light tripped on, but my truck is running noticably stronger. Now on to look up how to reset that light, I know its on this site somewhere....

Message: Yep, code P0551 = power steering pressure sensor; just disconnect neg battery cable and hold ignition switch on for 30 seconds to clear the light. This site is great, I'd highly reccomend this mod.
