Subject: 5.7l Hemi Engine Swap
IP: Logged

Message:
I Found A 2003 5.7l HEMI with
3100 miles. The motor got Hydra static locked when some idiot decided to drive his truck into a fresh water lake. It broke 1 rod with no block or head damage. Since then, all parts have been replaced with original OEM stuff, and the valve covers have been polished. The guy at the Dodge dealership is asking 5100.00 (flexible) dollars for it, including some type of warranty. Here is a shot of the engine:

My question is, how much is this engine worth after being dunked in a lake? What should I offer him for it? He has mentioned that this motor sells for 8250.00 through Daimler Chrysler. Also if anyone has even a rough estimate of the costs of the other things I will be needing (tranny, computer, wiring, etc...) your input will be greatly appreciated.

Just in case you were thinking if trying that in the Dak, according to people like Fastman, the Hemi will not fit. It's too big.

lol, to big, and I bet you think that a viper V10 is to big to fit in a Jeep wrangler...

Anything can be made to fit. you just have to use some creativity.

For the engine, Have you seen that there is no engine damage? Have you seen the bore on the thrown rod?

I'd probably get it, If it came with the computer, sensors, and wiring, IF I had the money.

I'd want the valve covers pulled off at least. If he has a warrannty, I guess it might be ok.

Fitting that thing into the Dakota is no small project. Any kind of engine swap never is.

Even if it came with a computer, how you gonna get that to interface with your existing harness and dash? The hemi computer is 4 plug while ours is 3. After all that work you'll have a < 300 rwhp setup with drive-by-wire technology. Good luck modding that.

Here's the thing about this new Hemi, people are so ga-ga over the thing because they flash back to the Hemi days of old that they don't sit down and realize that nothing about this motor is the same as the original other than the hemispherical head design. IOW, this ain't your Dad's Hemi.

For $5,000 bucks you can make your existing setup fly by the hemi.

Add all the aggravation trying to make it fit etc.. why bother.

Well currently I have a 5 speed 3.9l with about 70,000 miles. The truck I'm building will be mostly for show, and magazines. So I guess the "wow" factor of a Hemi is a big part of it. I might just end up settling for a 4.7l. But before I do, should I take a shot at this engine? How much do you guys think its worth, and what should I offer him for it?
Thank you all for your input.

Well, unless you plan to just tow it to and from shows you still gotta figure out how to hook it up and make it run. No small task. That's a $5k gamble, IMO. The dealership's investment is probably $0 since they surely charged the customer full boat for the replacement.

Plus the fact that the motor was hydrolocked. I wouldn't take a chance.

I must've been thinking of another post. I thought you already had a V8. Since you've got a V6, I'd definetly get the Hemi.If you have to buy an ignition and filter, go ahead and get a cold air intake and a full MSD system to go along with it.

jesus you guys are all freaking morons

Everyone on here is mesmerized by the name HEMI, I guess DC's marketing programmed worked. The new 5.7l hemi has nothing but the very basic design of the heads in relation to the 64 and later 426 street hemis. Just because the 426 was a great street/strip motor in the 60's till today doesnt mean this 5.7 is worth a damn. I highly doubt any of you have the mechanical ability to actually swap this motor and figure out all the wiring to make it run. It is totally different than anything that has ever came in a dakota before. It shares absoulutly nothing with the platforms you have now. Even if you did have a wrecked hemi ram to steal all the harnesses and such off of, and actually got the motor to fit, and run, what are you left with? 100's of hours of work just to fit a sub 300rwhp, unmoddable motor into a truck.

Graphite01rt is one of the smartest guys on this site. He has lost of experience behind every post. Listen to what he says.

All you internet bench racers make me laugh. I garuntee half the guys posting on this thread talking about doing a HEMI swap cant even change their own oil...

hah

you dont want to switch from a 4.7 to a 5.9. That swap would be a pain in the ass as well. You can buy a nice forged 4.7 long block from krc and add one of their paxton kits. That will be a sure fire hemi slayer

I doubt that. my truck is completely stripped down. I will have all the engine components, and I can build a whole new dash with aftermarket guages, or just swap in a new one if necessary.
All things considered, this wont even be the most extensive modification done to my truck. Im not saying its going to be a cake walk, but next to all the custom fabrication I'll have done, it might seem like it to me.

If you don't want that motor i will take it. I had always said that if my 360 ever crapped out i would replace it with a 5.7 (hemi). Unlike those others who have little faith in their own engineering skills..i beleive i could get it to work in my truck..and also unlike those that think the HEMI is just a old school name for selling the new trucks..i believe that while that might be the case..it is still an excellent motor with tons of potential. SUre you could build up a 360 stroker to a 408 and supercharge it and stuff...but the 5.7 stock will give you alot of hp for the money with plenty of more power with additional mods as they become more available. Besides..i have yet to see somebody who has spent the same amount of money on proper suspension set up and tuning as they did the motor and never even get the power to the ground. So my OPINION is get the 5.7 and if you need any help..let me know!!

the 5.7L hemi does use the same transmission bolt pattern as the 4.7, that helps a little. That would be awesome to put the new style hemi in the dakota, it will be different. the power to weight ratio will make that a fast truck. 3600 is a great deal for it. try to find someone who makes a supercharger for it and a lot of people on this board will be looking at your tailgate.

and another suggestion, go to www.dakotausa.com you will not be critisized for every idea you have and people won't be using false names to insult you.

Thanks for that juniork. Your support means a lot, especially when I've had my heart set on getting that Hemi into a Dakota.
I've learned that Kenne Bell makes a supercharger kit for the Hemi that when released, will produce around 500 horsepower.
In response to "sucker's" post earlier, yes I do listen to what graphite has to say. His posts are most appreciated, and are exactly what I need to hear; the honest truth. I didn't want 50 different people to post: "hell yeah!" and "that's gonna kick ass!" because although its nice to hear, its only stating the obvious. I don't care what planet your from, a Hemi in a Dakota will always kicks ass. Graphite, and the rest, have shown me the mountain which lies down the road ahead. Now it is up for me to decide if I wish to climb that mountain, and how.
I don't know how the rest of you feel, but the name Hemi, although it sounds cool, is not mesmerizing to me at all. What I do think fascinates most people about the 5.7, is how it makes more power than any naturally aspirated stock truck engine. That and the sound of a Hemi, is what's mesmerizing.
Just for the record, I change my own oil and then some. Maybe the rest of you should clear that up for sucker as well.

when you put this 5.7 in you dakota, please take plenty of pics of what you had to cut and fabricate to share with others who want to do this. also, when you figure out the engine mounts, make a dupplicate set. i think you could probably sell you notes, pics, and mount design to some less skilled dak owners trying to do the swap. nice work so far

Why not just buy a mopar crate motor, from Summit or someone? Same performace, less technology to fiddle with. Its not a hemi but it is 2500 dollars cheaper. I could go without a hemi for 2500 dollars.
