Dude, this is a brand new truck! ('03 Dak QC 4.7 4x4) Why is my driveshaft rusting? Does dodge normally leave these driveshafts bare? My u-joints and the front and rear pinion have rust all over them. The car has never seen salty roads or anything like that...what's going on?

maybe the drive shafts sit outside for a while and get rained on before being assembled. Surface rust is nothing to be concerned about.
Just enjoy your truck.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! If it really bothers you that much, do what was said before, just paint it with a rust prevention paint that you can even spray onto rust and call it good. You wont have any problems. It's no biggy. Things here and there will get some surface rust. It's just body panels you should worry about. Dodge actually does a pretty decent job at getting those done. Opposed to rust bucket Chevys.

On some metals, it takes nothing more than humidity in the air to cause surface rust, dont worry about it

The best way to take care of this problem is to raise the rear of the truck onto jack stands and chalk the front tires so the truck won't move on you. now start the truck up and put it in low gear and just let it idle, now craw under with some sand paper and hold it to the drive shaft as it turns taking the rust off now after you have it all nice and clean as it idles take a spray can of your favorite color and spray away at it while it turns, you won't get any drips or runs.

That sounded like a pretty good idea to me. LOL!

I just bought the same truck and it is the same way. So is my bro in-laws 2000 Ram.

The only time we even noticed was when under these trucks to weld in our Flowmasters.

You can't see it unless you're under the beast!!!

In reply to FazDak...I appreciate the apology...however, I am in fact, not a "new enthusiast"...I've got a '66 GTO (hence the screen name) that I've been building up for about 4 years now...and I am VERY familiar with the underside of my vehicles...I'm just appalled that Dodge would use a non-treated metal in their drive shafts...especially in a vehicle that will almost assuradely see some nasty weather and terrain. But again, your candor is appreciated. :-P

if it bothers you that much, pony up the $125 and just get an aluminum driveshaft, tada, less rotating weight(performance gains) and now you need not worry about rust(aluminum=no rust.....)

Better to chock those tires than chalk them. GM driveshafts rust too, why are you surprised ? It was often said GTO stands for Gas, Tires and Oil, has the dripping oil protected yours ?
