Subject: 5.2 vs 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Well here is my comparison of the 2 engines. The 5.2 was in a 98 C.C 4WD and the 4.7 in a 2001 R.C 2WD. Both are 5 speeds however.
The 5.2 I noticed almost instantly lost power after hitting the red line of 4,600 RPM's. The red line is not indicated on the 4.7 tachometer however but it does feel like it produces power right up to and a little past 5,000 RPM's.
The 5.2 would ping really bad when you were running the RPM's to low and you would have to down shift to to get the RPM's up. The 4.7 can be bogged right down with no engine knock whatsoever.
I had a 5.9 R/T C.C right beside me at the light and unfortunatley couldn't get him to bite even on an empty rural road. Another thing I enjoyed this weekend was pulling into a local pool hall and parking beside this guys riced out Integra or something simmilar. Backing in the rumble from the Cat back set his alarm off and with all the bay doors open everyone turned to see what the problem was. The guy comes running out to turn it off. Then I leave before him and as soon as I turn the key the muffler growls to life and sets it off again. Once again he turns it off while I am idling and putting a CD in the player. As I leave I push the clutch down and rev it up one more time and set his car alarm off a 3rd time while I am laughing my ass off.
Earlier I took a buddy of mine out starting of quitely in 1 st and then shiffting to 2nd squeal the tires with the limited slip rear end run though 2nd up to about 5,000 RPM's in about 2.5 seconds shift in to third and get a real nice tire slip on that shift as well. He wants to trade in his Blazer which cost 5 grand more and buy a truck like mine now. God I am having a good time with this machine.

Message: Jeffster,
I know the feeling. I love my 4.7 as well. My wife has the 5.2 in her 99 4x4 Durango. While I like the 5.2 and think it is a good strong engine with a lot of potential, it is not quite up to the 4.7. My wife was wanting to trade her Durango in for a new one with a 4.7 after she drove my truck a few times. I have conviced her to keep it and I would pump up her 5.2 a little. As for the car alarms, thats hilarous. Mine does the same thing in parking lots and garages.

Message: I never drove or rode in a 4.7. I have the 5.2 and raced planty of 4.7 as far as racing i never loss to one when i had only headers and cat- back. I like the 5.2 due to the fact it acts really good with the mods i've done. Which is a cam, heads, intake, thottle body, ported intake, Viper stall converter and shift kit. I like the 5.2 over the 5.9 With those mods i run a 13.38 @ 103.45 I'm very pleased with it. I'll let you know how its acts with the Procharger. Keep the 4.7 going
98 rc, limited slip 3.92, custom cam, roller rocker, crower lifters and pushrods, MSD 6AL, Blaster coil, 8.5 mm wires, Mopar PCM, CNC ported heads, 2.02 Valves, ported intake With cut runners 12", 52mm Ported TB, 3400 precision industries stall, Transgo shift kit and more

Message: With the mod's you have you better take out the 4.7's handily. Sounds like quite the rocket of a truck you have built yourself. My goal is to get high 12's by the time I am done with this engine including a super charger of course and other goodies as they become available. Unfortunatley Cat back and cold air will be all I can do for the next several months. You should be well into the 12's with the S.C. that you plan on adding. Regardless Magnum power is awesome and I hope performance technology becomes as readily available for the OHC 4.7 engine as it does for the push rod V8's.
This is the only downside to the 4.7 I can see. For stock and basic mod's the 4.7 is definetly a move in the right direction allthought it isn't as proven as the engine it replaces. The OHC is quite a strong positive feature that could allow for some extreme performance if everything else is tuned properly. My perceived potential in an OHC V8 was the main reason I got this truck.
