Subject: Best way 2 spend $1k on '03 4.7l Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Okay...so I'm in to drag racing - I drive a GTO. My dad want's a new Dakota for utility purposes - and lets just say, I don't want it to be stock. From the factory it will be a Graphite gray fully loaded 4.7L Automatic Quad Cab 4x4. Keeping the budget around $1000, and doing some brief research on the net...here's what I came up with for my shopping list: (Feel free to make suggestions/changes - especially if you know somewhere I can get these things cheaper) - All prices are from truckperformance.com
1.) GIBSON Dual 2 1/2inch Split Rear Exit Aluminized Steel Cat Back Exhaust System ($355)
2.) JET Stage 2 Power Module ($240.99)
3.) K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit Air Intake ($268.99)
4.) JET Powr-Flo Throttle Body Spacer ($98.99)
5.) JET 180* thermostat ($13.99)

Message: Remove both Jet Objects from the list and get either a KenneBell Optimizer II, or an ASE Program. I'm saying this because I think you want to increase power not loose power. The Throttle Body spacer does absolutely nothing and that is per Jet. And the dyno tests have proven the Jet Chip will bring down the power by 3 to 10 hp over stock. And the K&N Drop in Filter for the 4.7L does as good a Job as the entire kit. Don't worry about the 180 t-stat until you have done more things like CAMS and Throttlebody.

Message: 1. Ok if you do item #6, otherwise keep stock exhaust and replace muffler with stainless steel Magnaflow (or similar). save about $250
2. ahhh, no. Do more research on the Jet module for the 4.7
3. Get the 360 AirIntakez for about $100 less.
4. see item #2
5. ok
6. Install HO cams and intake for around $350
7. change gear ratio to 3.92 or 4.10 if you have 3.55s
8. Take off belt-driven clutch fan

Message: If you installed all the above, you may net 5 rwhp. Purchase a Drop in K&N or similar air filter. Magnaflow 3" muffler with 3" exit. Any muffler shop will install this for under 250$.
Gibson is garbage, same with the Jet crap. If anyone disagrees, good, go voet for Hittlery Rotten Cliton!

Message: I look at a dakota the same way I look at a 5spd mustang - they have potential. Stock we can argue about the lackluster performance, but these vehicles are fun to modify and drive. Comparing a new lightning which cannot be bought for less than $54,800 Canadian is comparing apples to oranges. I can order a 4.7 5spd with almost all the bells and whistles for 26k even. Now at double the price am I getting the double the performance? No - but I am getting pretty good value per dollar.

Message: This message board drives me crazy. I'm still trying to learn. I don't have an ego problem like some,So, I don't mind sounding ignorant.
I have 02 4.7 automatic. I put the K&N Gen II, Autolite 3423, 180 T-Stat, and yes the Jet Chip. Also, I removed the third cat with the Flowmaster 1 in 2 out exhaust. I'm not completely satisfied.
What is the PCM perfomance flash, KenneBell Optimzer, do the HO cams and intake really increase the HP. In lay terms, what else should I do? If someone knows of a speedshop that does this kind of work in the So Cal area please advise.

Message: hmmm, well i would say make sure when the truck is ordered, make sure it has the 3.92 gears and a limited slip. You'll be much happier with this. If you are trying to keep your budget down, try the HO cams and don't get the manifold. The cams should run you about 110 apiece and will provide you with more performance than the other bolt on mods. You will get about 12-14 HP and about 20lbs of torque. Your dealer should be able to install them. Mine did. It cost me $350 for the cams and the intake. Alot of guys on this board changed them themselves because they are more mechanically inclined than I. I do feel the 350 was worth every penny. Check out 360air intakez. They even build a intake tube for our IAT sensors. You could also go with the drop in air filter and buy a piece of mendrel 3" pipe that is bent at 90 degrees and clamp it from the intake manifold to the stock air box. Right now we are at about 600-700 dollars. With the rest you could either have the stock exhaust hacked off and have a nice magnaflow put in. If you don't mind going over a grand. I throttle body will also help performance. Go either 68mm or 70mm. Flowmetrics makes them or so does fastman. The flowmetrics is the whole unit. With fastman, you send him the core. From what i hear kenne-bell makes the best flash for the dakota's computer. They take into consideration all the mods we have done to our trucks and help with our shifts. Right now i don't beleive they are able to flash the 2003 yet. You also have to send in your computer to get it flashed. Do you have strict emmisions laws? If not you can hack off your third cat and just replace it with a straight pipe. Well i hope this helps some.

$1270, so I went over by 270...Just eat peanut butter and jelly for a few days.
4.7 5-spd 3:92's
Low 13's on a 100HP shot.
Sell the 70MM TB, weld back up the stock exhaust(if you needed) Sell aftermarket exhaust, take off nitrous kit.... Easy enough to put back to stock, and you're hauling some serious arse.
