Subject: Pulleys Are Junk!! IP: Logged
Message: I got a set of Kenne Belle Pulleys and for starters I didn't notice really any difference in power and latley the alternator is killing my batterie and I have to charge it right up again on the bench and then after another week its dead again, its mostly at low idle and low speeds that kill it and I only do maily in town driving so its always dead, I'm getting sick of it. Anyway I have head of some guys that put the original alternator pulley back on but laeve the crank and put a new belt on does anyone know what size that belt is?? Or what code?? I dont really feel like pulling that crank pulley back off because it was a bit of a pain in the A$$. Thanks In advance.

Message: Make up your mind if you want to go racing or cruising. Under drive pulleys are not made for idling around town. I bet you got a boom box in there to. Idling around at night with the lights on, boom box blarring and probably neon lighs under the truck while your turning the alternator too slow. Dah

Message: If your alternator was working before you changed the pullies, than it should be good. Change back to your stock alt. pulley. If you have a pre '97 Dakota, get a pulley from a '97+ Dakota, they are a little smaller and charge the battery better at idle. It will bolt right on. You don't have to decide between racing or cruising as suggested ignoantly above, and getting a better alternator will not help if it's turning too slow. I have an underdrive pulley with a '97+ alt. puley and do mostly city driving with no problems. I'll have to check on the belt length if you still need it.

Message: My post was not BS, it was meant as a suggestion. If you want to run the underdrive pulleys and have charging problems, get a re-wound higher amp alternator. I just picked one up for this very reason. 160amp alternator. I'ts a stock unit that has been rewound to put out 80 amps at idle and 160 amps at 1500 RPM. So, getting a better alternator will help with your charging problems.

Message: Hey thats great,
Alternators also go some times you idiot. Before you go through all the aggravation of changing pulleys around, all you have to do is to do a charging sytem check. No sense of changing pulleys if the frigen alternator is shot. You always start with the simple things first you fool.

Most of the responses are derived from the ignorance of what seems like adolescent little children who resort to name calling. They probably have nothing better to do with themselves. SXT4ME is probably only 12 or 13 years old. Right poopie head?
HSKR-
Getting a better alternator will help, IF it's turning at the right speed. I have a 160 amp alternator also and went through this. It would only put out 11.8 volts at idle with the underdrive pulley. Switching to the smaller alternator pulley solved it and now puts out 13.4 volts at idle.
Kowalski-
Yes, the higher the amp. output, the more drag it creates, but it shouldn't lower your idle RPM's.

Message: Thats Great should go to electronics school. Stereo amps can pull an easy 30 amp load when you got them blasting. When the alternator is turning slow and putting out 20 amps , you are taking more out of the battery than you are putting in it. Then of course you got to figure in head lights and such. You should do your homework before you act like an authority on a subject you obviously know nothing about. It's cool how you can call someones product junk when you don't know how to use it.

Message: going to a 140amp alt is going to do you no good as it will take more power to run, reversing the effects of the underdrive pulleys... put the stock alt pulley back on and everything will be fine. If you are still having charging probs get the battery checked, the stockers are crap. Gurarantee an Interstate or Optima will fix all your probs.

Message: Well 93dak,
For your information I am a 40 year old service advisor for Goodyear. I know that he could change back his stock pulleys too see if that would fix the charging problem. But it is also quite possible that the alternator just need to be replace also. Have you ever heard of a coincidence? We have put tires on a customers car and a week later the exhaust falls off. Is that because of the tires or just a coincidece? It would be faster to have him just check him charging system. Also, a larger alternator does not take more "power" to run than a smaller one.

I would have been embarrassed to admit that you're a 40 year old service advisor after that post! I wasn't questioning your suggestion that his alternator may be bad, I was referencing your childish name calling you dookie dork.
Also, I said his alternator SHOULD be good, not it IS good.

Message: no response to my question but, you can change
the diameter of the idler or tension pulley diameters on some engines (5.9,5.2) cheaper than
a different belt.

Message: The hiugh amp rating alternators shoudl turn slightly hard, especially under a load, but shouldn't be enough to really notice on performance. As far as re-wound alternators still not putting out the pwer at idle, it depends on who re-wound it and how they did it. There are re-wound alternators that put out 180 amps at 1500RPM, but still run same amps at idle. Then there are some like the one I bought that put out 160 amps at 1500RPM but will put out 80 amps at idle. Just depends on the materials used and how they did it. BTW, on mine with the charging problems at idle, It's when I'm running the A/C, stock e-fan on and both amps for my stereo on. I'm also running a underdrive alternator pulley to make the belt fit properly.

Message: are you serious... you say a 140amp alternator dosen't take more power to turn than a 80... so in your theory you are creating energy, the laws of physics say this is not true... you are converting the energy in the engine to electricity... it will take more power to put out 140amps than 80... if you don't believe this is true you need to seriously step back and take a look at reality.
