Message: Well that is up to you and how much you think it is worth. In my option in no way could I justifiy 500 dollars for a stainless steel exhaust system just for the sound. Even a steel system is over 200 dollars. But depending where you live a steel system won't last in areas where salt is used on the roads.
Some think they get lots of HP increase with a better flowing muffler. I doubt that very much. I read one post where the guy dyno'd the truck before and after the muffler change. He recorded a 1.9 hp increase.....that sounds more like it. I couldn't ever justify 200 dollars for a 1.9 hp increase.
I have a 2001 Dakota with a v8 and a 5 spd. What I did was get a dynomax ultraflow stainless steel. The p/n is 17289....got it from Summit Racing...127 dollars delivered...25 dollars rebate good until the end of the month of May.
The sound and 1.9 hp increase is worth 102 dollars.....but if you think 500 dollars is worth it....go for the stainless steel duals.

Message: I'd get a whole exhaust system. Wouldn't mandrel-bent pipes be better than stock?

Message: Yes mandrel bent pipes are better....1.9 hp increase over stock....is that worth 500 dollars????
You are never going to even notice the difference....seat of the pants feel. Besides on my Dakota ....from the factory the only pipe not mandrel bent is the tailpipe....the pipe between the muffler and cat are mandel bent.
Keep in mind the on a race car a tenth of a sec could mean the difference between winning and losing...so that 1.9 hp increase could mean a lot and be worth the 500 dollars. On a street car or truck it isn't worth it.
Changing the muffler is the biggest bang for the buck. It is the bottleneck in the exhaust system. Reducing the backpressure will allow the power to come on sooner but the ultimate hp doesn't change much unless you are changing the cam and a few other things.
Again....if you have the extra cash....dual stainless steel exhaust is really cool....just don't expect major power gains by changing just that.

Message: I agree w/gtm - The gains are very small from exhaust especially if you've done minor mods. I had a custom setup when I first got my truck. But I kept breaking hangers,,and when I lowered it I was always worried about my tips.
So I just cut it all off at the muffler, and welded on some homemade turn-downs. It's a flowmaster 2chamber. Sounds awesome (4.7) Plus I don't have to worry about tips, pipes rusting,,or someone kicking the tips, and breaking something,,,,or breaking hangers anymore. Plus I think it looks cleaner. Less is more.

Message: well u either do it right and spend alot of money on every aspect of your truck or u can just dick around with it and make your own intake and your own grill inserts.

Message: my 2 cents, I chopped in a dynomax muffler for 100 bucks, didn't like it, chopped in a flowmaster 50 series for another 100 bucks, again didn't like it. so i payed up the ass for mbrp single in dual out set-up, I love it!!!!!! my point is, to some that seem like alot of cash, for me, it is my truck, and if i have the funds for what i want, enough said.

Message: Yeah, no performance gains with the mbrp, but it sounds wicked, I will take my mbrp over a flowbastard any time. I am getting tired of peeps of the street, dude your exhaust sounds badass, must be a flowmaster??????????? not!!!!

Message: a person in my apartment complex told me that if i just stuck on a raven on my truck i would notice a big difference in teh response. My accel wouldn't be much better but i would get better response on the freeway. If you have driven a 2.5' on the freeway then you know that it takes a few seconds for the damn thing to start accelerating when you push down on the gas.
