Subject: Mash the pedal? IP: Logged
Message: I admit it.
I have NEVER raced.
I'm more that a little curious...
When leaving the "line", can I just "stand on it"? We're talking about an automatic trans.
I'm sure that I'd need to "heat" the tires first, and that (to avoid wheelspin) I can't just MASH it of the line, but once I've hooked up, what are the consequences of opening it wide up?
I've always been pretty conservative as far as not wanting to over-rev the motor, and I'd like to know if I'd do any serious damage to the engine by "flooring" it every now and then.

Message: The consequences of flooring it out of the hole (that I have discovered so far) include really rapid acceleration, a nice V-8 roar, and a wide grin. Since you have an automatic transmission, it pretty much automatically shifts for you and will pretty much keep your engine from blowing up. It's some really cutting edge technology that they're putting in cras these days, I tell ya.

Message: I would suggest you mash it at least once. Another method of launching an Auto is to "Load Up" the converter. Sit on the line and push the brakes hard and then bring the revs up. When you get a certain rpm let go of the breaks and mash. Too much wheelspin? launch at a lower RPM next time. In my truck (5spd.) I launch from around 1200-1500 Rpm, once the second yellow lights I drop the clutch and hammer it, which gives me a wee bit of wheelspin and then some really good traction.
I have heard few people support the "Heat the Tires" theory. For street tires which have very hard compound rubber no signifigant amount of heat will be retained, and if it is they get slippery. I go straight past the water box and just stage when I go to the strip, and all of my fastest times have been set without a burnout.
Save the Burnout for the street in front of the girlfriends house! (or after you get some slicks)

Middy.

Message: my auto sucks after hitting the water box...
after my frist run, my tires spun more than
halfway down the track every time. (1/8th mile)
my first run, I went through the water box,
stopped a little past it, and chirped the tires,
just enough to get the water, and excess dirt/
dust off. I held the brakes and kept the revs @
2000....pretty much no wheel spin.
that was my first run ever at the dragstrip, hell,
call me lame, but I have never watched drag
racing, and the whole "christmas tree"
staging deal. It was all new to me, but pretty
much trial and error for everyone, including the
novice racer.

Message: I second the not heating up of street tyres.
I have never been to an open track either. I plan on maybe going to one in Denver in August, if they have one, and it's open then. Anyone here real familiar with Denver!

Message: Forgot the other reason you shouldn't hit the box with street tires, The treads will hold the water in them and carry it right up to the line with you. The volume may not be alot but you don't always need alot to make someones life very difficult. Slicks are a whole different story but since I don't run em I can't say.

Oh well, learn something new everyday.

Message: Rev it up ( brake & gas) then at the light (2nd yellow full on at the strip)let of the brake then gas it as fast as you can without doing a burn-out .One more thing when you stage don't cook the tires just spin them for a half second or they will get very slick and spin easier.
