Subject: another cat removal question? IP: Logged
Message: i know its been asked several times before.
my 2000 has 1(one) cat and the oxygen sensor is before the cat.i could surely get by with removing and putting a straight 3" in its place, right?tennessee has no smog laws, inspections, etc.and it should not make the computer run too lean/rich?(sensor in front of cat)would i benifit much from removing it performance wise, other than a louder exhaust?
thanks

Message: I do not know about a 2000 model Dakota. I have a 94 and if you run true duals with no cat on a 94 you will get code 32. Code 32 has 2 meanings.1. EGR malfunction. 2. Possible air/fuel ratio imbalance. If you check the Haynes manuals for the full size Ram trucks for 94 and up it will give both explainations for this code. That leads me to think that the removal of the cat will cause a lean condition. As far as I know these trucks still have the Speed Density form of computer system on them. If that is the case the same will happen to you. I don't know if there is a code that will specifically point this out on your 2000 model truck. That there is a posssible lean condition occurring. But, if you think about it it makes sense that the removing of the cat that will flow only 250-300 cfm that the exhaust system can now flow at the rate of open pipe. The exhaust rate of 2 1/2 inch open pipe is much greater than 300 cfm. (If I am not mistaken it is around 1200 cfm.)

Message: Steve,
I was STUCK at 14.00000's for a long time...
With the edition of injectors, true duals, and no cats, I dropped 4-5 tenths. So yeah, I would expect some gains. It wasn't all on the top end either.
Gains may not be as much without forced induction, but I would say, as long as you don't go too big on the ID of the pipes, you'll be OK.
I would say 2-1/4 duals on N/A 4.7, and 2-1/2" on a S/C 4.7L. Demon is running 2-1/2" on his truck though with nothing but positive comments.
Don't forget to SIM the rear o2 sensor.

Message: If the O2 sensor is in front of the cat I would cut the thing off. Cutting the cat off probably gave me a more noticalble increase in power than any of the "small" add-ons that I have.
