Subject: Shift Kit -- 5.9 R/T?? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone have any experience with shift kits??
Easy/hard to install? Work as advertised?
I have a 99 R/T, looking for some tire-chirping shifts (I think)
Thanks, ART

Message: Transgo has a kit. I have one on my Durango and it gets real close to a tire chirp but I have lazy 3.55 gears and 20's. The kit cost about $100 and you could do it yourself but I paid a shop to do mine (they adjusted my bands also) $250 so $350. But, its worth it if your looking for the firmer shifts. I went with the Street/Strip mode but if I were to do it all over again I'd do the "race" mode. Hopes this helps.

Message: Shift kit's are kinda finicky. If they ain't installed just right with the stars in the right position, they will not work and you will have to take it back in to get re-adusted more than once, and might not ever get it right. I woudl suggest one of the valve bodies for sale from www.thefastman.com

Message: i put a transgo kit in my 01 r/t (and im a mechanic) i did EXACTLY what the direction said to do and i had nothing but problems. i had to replace the whole tranny. transgo has you do things to you valvebody that you shouldnt do or things to your transmission that do nothing, example put a stiffer spring in the rear servo. this does nothing the rear servo is mainly for reverse. i strongly advise against transgo there kits maybe good for other vehicles but not for mopars. you could try and talk with dan arcand at fastman he sells a differant brand of kit. im sure there are more guys out there that have had problems with transgo than just me, if any of you guys are reading this please list your problems and get it known to other people so there not ultimatley buying another tranny.

Message: I have installed transgo kits in my 93 Dakota and it shifted very well Chirped 2nd with mopar controler and 3.55s. I towed my challenger race car with this truck. Truck is still in use with over 150k miles. You have to install resistor in line with the contoller on the newer trucks or you will have to much line pressure. This is in the kit.

Message: I went to the trans guy near me to see about getting a shift kit and having it installed. I've heard a lot of people say the transgo kits will give good results and a few guys say they had nothing but problems or the shifts still weren't very firm. At any rate he is trying to talk me into a fairbanks kit. My brother has a fairbanks torque converter and shiftkit in his vette and it shifts like you're spraying into second gear. 2nd isn't just a chirp. If you start rolling the throttle on hard at the end of 1st gear, it'll snap your neck, turn sideways, and just roast the tires till you let off or find some magic traction on the road.
