Message: Depends what you want. If you like the look of the R/T and that is the most important, go with it. The 4.7 with the 5speed is just as fast if not faster, but can be customized to look the way you want. The R/T isn't a screamer unless you are willing to dump a bunch a money and time into it, plus the rims are heavy. The 4.7 is way more fuel efficient also. If you insist on modding, just go with the big mods on the 4.7 which is the Kenne Bell supercharger, the 4.7s love it. My 5.9 didn't respond well to the small mods and I didn't want N2O.

Message: The R/T isn't just the engine. It comes with the 9.25 inch dana, it's lowered and has a better supension with bigger wheel and low pro tires. I think the 4.7 with the stick and the 5.9 auto are pretty close in the 1/4. But you have to remember there is no substitution for cubic inches.

I have the 4.7 5 spd CC and I can beat every R/T known to man. not really, but I like it and it gets good MPG, like 17 avg while gettin on it every once in a while.
Do a google search for Dodge 4.7 and find some pictures of the bottom end bearing cradle, I just love it man, it's like a racing bottom end. It's the new technology that replaced the old.
I almost paid the extra money for an R/T until I found mine for $11,500 with no miles on it. I couldn't pass it up.
The R/T is nice either way and you can't go wrong, but looking at the 1/4 mile times these 4.7's are running I would've been pissed to have found out that my $20,000 truck is gettin beat by some cheaper Sport model with a smaller engine.
The 4.7 cost's more than the Hemi to build, so there must be some good ingredients, anyway, that's just what I think, but I am right though.
That $2k in savings can mean a slightly used supercharger kit, and one paycheck later; an intercooler for it; and TA DA; MID 13's !!!!!
Make sure it has an LSD though, and get the 3:92's with it also, you'll like em better than the 3:55's.
Uhh, by the way, my 4.7 sport came with the 9.25" rearend just as the R/T's and the full-size, and those things are a HOSS for such a small truck.

They said that no doubt the 4.7 is faster stock and will eventually be faster all together. Its just that since the 360 has been around for 40 years it has more mods, right now anyway.

Message: So I guess the Ford 4.6 281ci is just a big piece of crap, since its not as big as the "360". That saying might have been right 10 years ago, but they arent making engines like they used to. If the 4.7 was in the "R/T", which it will be, hmmmm.... wonder why, than a lot more people would buy it because it says "R/T" on the side and more performance parts will be made for it. Once that happens the 5.9 360 will be blown away. And us 4.7 guys will have a lot more cash saved up since we dont get 8 mpg and waste all that money on gas.

Message: I can offer you some info. I have a 2000 R/T and a 2003 2wd 4.7 L 5-speed. You want a "sportier" truck out of the box, get the R/T. You want a 5-speed, get the 4.7.
If you get the 4.7, you'll need to spend a few bux to lower it, color match bumpers, and put some rims on it to get it looking similar to the R/T.
Stock vs stock the trucks will be similar in 1/4 mile time.
You want better mileage, get the 4.7. I drive with a fairly heavy foot and get about 10 in my R/T and 16 in my 4.7 (the R/T is a CC and the 4.7 is a RC though)

I have the 4.7 and I personally think you should get the R/T. If you have to ask this kind of question in an online forum, and you base your next purchase on someone else's opinions, then you definitely need an R/T.

Message: These threads are really funny. All of the 4.7 guys seem to hate the R/Ts. Well news flash both trucks are slow. If you want to go fast don't buy a truck unless you want to do alot of work on it to make it fast. I bought an R/T because is a goodlooking and handling truck that has some balls. The 5.9 is so downtuned it's not funny. It's not very hard to make 1hp per cubic inch. With more inches you get more power. A 4.7 is not going to touch a 5.9 if they are set up the same. 5.9 Auto to 4.7 Auto there is no comparison. The saying there is no replacement for displacement is not old, it's true. Anything that can be done to a 4.7 can be done to a 5.9 yeilding more power. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

The new Hemi engine is 5.7L and the 30 year old design is 5.9L. and what's the difference in stock hp ratings? A new 5.7L Hemi in a Dakota would be the hot ticket. Screw that old tech stuff. You have to work on it too much to get it to go. I heard they make great boat anchors tho.

Message: I have a 4.7 dakota. personally I could care less what motor it has as long as its a v8. ive raced a few dakota RT. I wont lie they were faster than me but I have a 4x4 with 33s. Stock they were about 1-2 lenghts ahead of me but never pulled away once we got going. Still beat me though.
As for my opinion
if youre looking for wide tires lowered stance truck get the RT. If you get the sport youll ahve to lower it get rims get paint on bumpers jsut to make it look like a RT and it still wont be one.
If the 4.7 is cheaper and $$ is a issue get the 4.7 just please dont put RT stickers on it.
I like the 4.7 I drove a 4.7 318 and a 360 dakota RT. The 4.7 seemed to have more pull at highway speeds than the 318/360 did. Overall I considered them all very similar in performance ( but its hard to judge with the samesman yakkin away)
I wanted a 4x and the only ones they had were the 4.7s.
As for gas mileage jeez I envy you guys who are getting 16-18 MPG. if I go easy and unfurl the big sail with wind pushing on a downhill I may get 14 MPG. my average is 12 MPG. and no there is nothing wrong with the motor. I jsut changed plugs and oil and filter and it still makes no difference. it was getting this mileage when I had the 31s on it also. I almost thought to go down to 235 75 15. Almost. nit That would look geeky.
If I had a choice now Id get a RT jsut cause i think they look cool and I dotn need 4 wheel drive for what I do.

WAKE UP !
The R/T badge stands for performance and handling, and since your 4.7 powered Dakota cannot get the special handling components, tires, rims etc etc then it should not have the R/T badging.
I'm not by the way picking on any 4.7 powered Daks here. Both are great vehicles simply designed and built with different options and looks.
Enjoy what you've got and respect your fellow DODGE owners. This board provides a very bad view when other brand owners visit as we spend more time in here arguing with other DODGE owners then we do anyone else.

Why does the hemi based engine, same valve angle, pushrods and all still hold the 1/4 mile and single engine top speed record. Newer does not mean better. Sure the 4.7 is much more efficent from the factory. But it doesn't mean you can't make the 5.9 out perform one.

im about to get a new quad cab or cc, and i dont know which engine i should get??? i wanted to get the 4.7 b/c someone told me that it is an aluminum block(yeilding lighter truck). i have a 360 in my 92 dak and its heavy as hell. also i like the fact that the 4.7 gets better gas mileage. cuz im getting about 14 right now in my 360. and also i tow a light trailer for landscaping, i wanted to know if the 5-speed would suck if i was towing. and would it be worth it to get the 5-speed if if is kinda tough. ive been driving a 5-speed since i was old enough to know what the real purpose if phone books really were, so its not like i cant drive a stick, but is the tranny strong enough to tow and race??? thanx for your opinions!
