Subject: Auto. Shifting Problems IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I have a question for all of you "Techies" here in Dakota Land. I have a '96 Dakota Auto trans, with a 3.9L. Lately I will be going down the road at about 65 to 70 MPH when I will lightly let off the gas to slow down 2 or 3 MPH. When I let off the gas some, the truck will slam into drive in trade making the engine run at around 3,500 RPM. After this happening, I will not be able to get the vehicle back into overdrive until I stop and take off from a start again. I replaced the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) but this has made no difference. I would appreciate any info on this and if anyone else has had the same problems. Thanks

Message: I have a 99 5.9 r/t with about the same problem. After cruising on the interstate for ahwile...as soon as i let off the gas slightly it will downshift from od to 3rd on my auto.. then i have to hold it steady there for awhile to get it to shift back into od. sometimes it doesnt even want to shift back. wierd thing is... this will continue in town as well after my interstate run. However, if i reset the computer or shut it off and let it sit for awhile..the problem seems to disapear. i first thought that this was initiated by the cruise...but have found it does it sometimes without the cruise as well... I need help as well.

Message: 98dak....Thanks for the info. I was also informed in another forum that a fix was to replace the overdrive sensor in the tranny. Does anyone know if this is the same sensor or not? Also, anyone know where to get this speed sensor and any idea how hard it is to replace? I am wondering since the vehicle has 183K on it and am debating on just replacing the tranny itself because I might be changing out the motor to a larger one. Thanks

Message: I hooked the truck up to the auto scanner and got the codes it was flashing. Here are the definitions of the codes I got. 1. Map sensor voltage too low. 2. TPS voltage higher than max limit. 3. 3-4 shift malfunction. 4. Trans Temp sensor performance. Also the scanner let me know that I have the model 42RE transmittion in this truck. Anymore info on ideas for a fix would be appreciated. Will be starting in on this project in about a week. Thank you everyone for your help.
