Subject: AZ Dak Owners - 4.7 HO Install Help
IP: Logged

Message:
I just ordered the HO intake and cams. Since I'm not mechanically inclined (other than the basics), can someone recommend a place to get them installed, other than the dealer, in the Phoenix, AZ area? The dealer estimated the install as a 10 hour job for roughly $700.

Any other AZ Dakota owners here??

If you have basic knowlege it is easy. Order the wedge tool from KRCperformance and if you run into any snags call Marty and ask questions. That is what I did and the install was an easy 5 hours. Probably could have done it in 3 hours but I really took my time.

I bought a Dodge because it was the first truck out with a quad cab...although Ford was very quick to copy the design in their F-150. I also noticed the average intelligence level of a Ford F150 owner is below that of a Dodge owner, judging by your ability to express yourself. Since you're over here at a Dodge board, you must have penis envy or something.

Back to the main post...if I had the skills and experience I'd do it myself. I'd rather pay to get the job done correctly or get some assistance. I wouldn't mind learning how to do it though.

Hey MCW82, where did you locate the HO intake and cams? And how much did this set you back, if you don't mind me asking? I'm probably asking questions that have been answered many times before but since you just bought them, I know I'm asking the right person:-)

I got a Dodge POS that'll eat F150's for lunch all day long and get better gas mileage and it doesn't squeak and it looks better and handles better and pulls 6500 lbs, etc, etc, etc, oh yeah, does your Triton have a main-bearing cradle????? Just caps? Huh? Those suck...
Didn't think so....
Think about it before you crack on a company owned by the same folks as Mercedes-Benz dumba$$ Ford owner. You're outta your league.
I sure hope you live close to Little Rock cuz I'd love to race OR pull your POS!!!

Yeah! Whatever Mr. H said! :P

Quadster - I bought them at the local Dodge dealer with a 15% discount. The cams were $270 for both and the manifold was $161. The total came out to a little over $400. I would suggest getting them from www.buymopar.com. I they quoted $358 with shipping, but I couldn't wait
7 days for them. Overnight was pretty steep.

Now I have to decide if I want to shell out another $700 for 10 hours or labor to install them. However, I've been hearing they should take no longer than 6 hours tops...so where is the extra 4 hours going?!

If you do go to the dealer, just give them the Mopar part number and keep quiet.

Ignore the moronic Ford/Chevy people that come here to heckle us. The only ones that deserve attention are the ones that know and respect the Dodge Dakota and it's abilities, and they should only respect us if/when we show them the proper respect.

Quadster, HO Intake and Cams "can" be ordered from your local Dodge dealer, although I doubt they are as good a price any more since they noticed the massively increased demand for them.

It took a pair of backyard Jimbo's a total of 6 hours to do the cams AND intake along with a "drive-into-town-and-sit-down-to-eat" lunch break, AND we installed new fuel injectors while we were in there. Not to mention the "remove hood" step that we added to the process.

I am not sure if you live in an area with a private mechanic (not a corporate big guy like Poop Boys), but I bet you can get this crap done for cheaper than $700. And I could do it myself for quicker than 10 hours, and I've forgotten a lot of the steps that we did on my truck..... sheeeet. $700 my arse.....

Yeah, that's the same dudes that quoted straight outta the book "Yessir , that'll be $400 to change out the differential or 5.6 labor hours" , anyhow, he was quoting me for a gear change, and a diff change doesnt incorporate half the steps of a full gearset change! These are the same guys that said the NV-3500 held 3.7 qts of trans fluid, ya just can't trust em anymore, those dealerships are ALL SALESMEN!!!!
FU_CK EM!!
(that of course excludes the dealerships that give great deals on the HO cams and Intakes, but you gotta knock the ones that deserve it)

In 2001, I phone ordered my HO cams from a dealer in R.I. $122, for both, included shipping to my door! Wow, they sure went up on the prices!

Try em anyway for a good deal,

Don't have the # handy, try directory assistance, or the net.

Try the dodge dealer in Wakefield Rhode Island,

it may be worth it!

I'll report in when the install is done. I'm just biting the bullet and the cash by having the dealer do it. They offered me the 30k maintenance half off. I also found another 10% discount coupon from their site...so it might not be that bad after all.

Hopefully, the lower end performance will noticably improve as stated from the other post. But I guess it's like sex...you can hear about it and discuss it all day long, but you really don't know until you actually try it for yourself.

OK, I swallowed the horse pill and had the dealer perform the install. It's there right now. They estimated 6 hours at $70 an hour. They also gave me a free safety inspection when I balked at the $500+ 30000 mile maintenance check. The truck was given a clean bill of health, except the throttle body and fuel system, which were very dirty. The tech recommended that I get those cleaned "right away to avoid consequences". That's another $250 added. Are they trying to blow smoke up my a$$??

I turned it down, since I only had 27k miles.
Other than that, the install was going good.

Smoke up your ass indeed.

Run a can of fuel injector cleaner every time you change your oil. Then remove your throttlebody and clean it every 10,000 with some acetone or break cleaner. The directions are on www.speedtweaks.com under the how-to section.

Takes about an hour without beer.

The only consequences are a crappy idle. I'm not sure why they would talk about such consequences, other than to get you to spend money....

AZDak, thanks for the offer. I will definitely ask for your assistance the next time. I planning to get the Roadmaster Active Suspension next, but I think I can handle that. However, I might need some help/insight in removing the throttle body and cleaning it. I can't find any Haynes or Chilton manuals for the 2000 Dakota 4.7L. I want to at least clean it and maybe replace the stock original plugs with the Autolite 3923s.

OK, I got the HO intake and cams in. I didn't get the cheek flapping acceleration, but there was a noticable difference in low end torque. The engine also sounded throatier. I'm a little disappointed, considering it was a $900 upgrade (parts and labor), but for those who can install the HO intake and cams themselves, it's worth it.

So far, I have an Airaid intake system, Flowmaster exhaust, HO intake and cams, and the crap Jet2 chip, which I haven't removed out of laziness. I think the next upgrade I do will be the Roadmaster Active Suspension. After that I'm at loss between the KB reflash or V8 Performance's Stage III kit (IP Z-tube Powerstack intake, F&B 72mm TB, Gibson chrome headers).

Should I buy into V8Performances Advanced kit and then do the KB reflash or do the KB reflash first??

Without another thought, GET THE FLASH.

After you get the flash, upgrade your exhaust. Here's the secret: Replace everything from the y-pipe back to the tail pipe with single 3" pipe. 3" cat, 3" muffler(Dynomax or whoever), and 3" pipe in between.

Then, get a 70mm TB from F&B. That will make your truck a whole new animal.
