Message: Damn.... forgot you have 3 cats.
The 2000 model non-LEV trucks only had one cat.
What others have done is leave the first two cats (the pre-cats) in place and remove the 3rd cat (the one you can see from under the truck).
If you are worried about emmissions, don't remove that last cat. Replacing it with a 3" cat will not affect your emmissions, it will just increase exhaust flow.
I have the single 3" cat on my 2000, and I have never thrown a code. I also passed the new OBD2 emmissions test with no problems.

Message: DUDES!!! I just had an idea!!! I can put straight pipes behind headers with no cats or 3rd and 4th o2 sensors if I just get the pcm from a totalled 2000 non-LEV 4.7 Dak!!!!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but the non-LEV only reads from two o2 sensors behind the manifolds instead of all 4 on my 2001.
That's right right?? Anyone know if it'll work if I swap em out?

Message: What are the functions of the precats? Lastly, why do some people think Flowmaster are crap...and some think it's the best thing since sliced bread?
I believe my Flowmaster is 3" from the cat on back. Do you still recommend changing it with a different brand like Magnaflow or maybe Borlas?

Message: MCW82 lives in AZ and they are pretty tough on emissions here, I have the 01 Dak that has 3 cats I took off the 3rd one and it didnt do anything that i could notice, I had it welded back on with my catback system, If you want to do it right replace all of the cats with high flow big bucks though for very little gain.

Message: Man, I've been driving around Usery Pass near the Salt River testing the new mods. I noticed two things...my 18mo daughter enjoys it when I gun the gas going up and down the small hills and my gas drains a helluva lot faster now! Maybe the computer is slowly realizing something is up? I'm taking off the Jet 2 chip this weekend and resetting the PCM.
I've sent KB a few emails with no response about the 4.7L PCM reflash. My biggest concern is what happens when or if I visit a dealer next time and some numbnut reflashes the PCM? My guess is I'm SOL and out of $350.
Anything I can do to prevent that aside from NOT ever going to the dealer? I wish Hypertech develops something for the 4.7.

Message: Some notes:
1. You can swap PCM's except for one thing. They are flashed with the VIN number for that specific truck. Once they are flashed with a VIN, there's no reflashing the VIN. Oh well.
2. The pre-cats just clean up the exhaust mix a little more, right as it comes out of the motor.
3. Everyone's got a preference on mufflers. At the drag strip where I race, the saying goes like this: if you want to make noise, get Flowmaster. If you want to make power, get Dynomax. If you look at the guts of a Flowmaster, those "delta wedge" thingies just interupt the flow and make a bunch of noise. If you look through a Dynomax Ultr-Flo, you can see your best friend standing on the other end drinking a beer. That's because it's a straight thru muffler. I personally run Dynomax.
And yes, you need to replace everything in front of the cat with 3" pipe (up to the y-pipe) and replace that 2.25" cat with a 3" cat. You can buy a 3" cat from Summit Racing (actually it's Catco) for about $49 shipped. The exhaust guys will tell you that there's no such thing as a high-flow 3" versus a regular 3" cat. If that's the case, might as well just run the cheaper version.
4. As far as the KB flash getting over-written, you will have to specifically tell the dealer that you DO NOT want any autorized software updates added to your PCM..... the other thing is this: once you start modifying your truck, you have to become your own service department.
That is to say, if you are worried about keeping your warranty intact, you need to stop worrying about going faster. If you are going to worry about going faster, then you need to stop worrying about the warranty, because it's just gonna keep you up at night.
I've been driving the piss out of my truck for 68,000 miles and nothing has broken that I would consider a warranty item. I took it to the dealer for a squeaky driver's seat, and that's about it. No tranny problems, no axle problems that I couldn't fix, nothing engine related..... The only way to learn about cars is to work on them.... in that same vein, the quickest way to lose money and get ripped off is to let someone else work on your car....
Kinda like a $900 cam swap.
I would highly reccommend buying a factory service manual for your truck..... they are about 3" thick and have every single nut & bolt & procedure listed in them for your truck. They cost $115, but that is the bible when it comes to working on your Dakota.

Message: Thanks for the info, but I don't exactly understand: "Specifically for the vin#"
Will it work on my truck with a different VIN and just be illegal due to different numbers?
I don't care about that sh%t!
There's no inspection in AR anyway so I could almost run open exhaust and get away with it.

Message: No, it's not just illegal. Every PCM is flashed with the VIN number for the truck that it's installed in at the factory. If you try to run that PCM in another truck, it will eventually throw several codes and revert back to limp-home mode. The ABS will be screwed up and several other things.
Basically, it's a great idea, and I know about 1000 people that would love it if that was true, but it just won't work.

Message: Oh well, the catco 3" cats and bungs will be way cheaper than that anyway. About $500 for headers and a custom dumped exhaust system all the way back is what I'm lookin at with the catco's and a dynomax. I'll have a dump right behind the y-pipe with a custom removable cover for the dump for street/track quick-change. It should make for the "as good as it gets" setup for the 4.7 period. I want a F&B TB bad, but I'll prob get the 71 mm Fastman for practicality due to the fact that there's never a need for more than 700 cfm in that motor anyway.
(that was gettin long)
Thanks for the advice

Message: On that PCM change. It has to be a same year
swap. The PCM's look the same but the
connectors are wired to different outputs and
the programs are different. If it was that easy
all the 2001+ guys would be running the
programable 2000 PCM.
