Subject: Gears - Please Explain IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have posted a few times now, and can't seem to get a comlete answer. I have installed a 3" body lift, and Pro-Comp 305 70R16s on my 97 Dak. 3.9L 4x4. I have changed nothing with the gears. Do I need to? I assume I have the stock 3.55s? I haven't cranked my torsion bars yet, and I get some rub on the inside fender well, but that's it. Some people have said I need to get a suspension lift as well, others say no. So, I guess this is a 2 part question. Do I need more lift to run those tires, and do I need to change the gears also? I did have some problems getting up to higher speeds on the highway. I don't do much off-roading, none really. My odometer and speedometer are off as well. What else do I need to do?

Message: I guess if youre rubbing you could lift it some more. Dont know too much about that.
Since you went with a bigger tire you could change the gears to make up for it. Dont have to but it would restore some power. I`m sure it has lost some power since you gotta turn those big meats. I heard every inch in tire diameter is approx. .10 change in your effective gear ratio.
28" tire - 3.55 gear -- stock
33" tire - 3.05 gear --
and smaller tire would up the ratio...
26" tire - 3.75 gear.
I run 26" slicks at the track so that puts me about 4.12 ratio up from the 3.92 stock ratio.
Your speedo is reading slower than your going. Hey , thats cool though ,it keeps the miles down!
I think you can change it and have it read correctly with one of them HyperTech Power Programmers.
Maybe the dealer can re-program your computer for the tire change too.
Hope this helps.

Message: thats it big_torque, tell him bass ackwards how to do it. Actually the larger the diameter, the larger the number in the gear ratio. 28" ---3.55 OK then if you go to 33" you need to go to 3.96 and if can manage a 35" you need to go to 4.10 to maintain around the same engine speed relative to how fast you go down the road.

Message: I didnt tell him what gear he needs to correct it , I told him what his EFFECTIVE RATIO WOULD BE. i.e. (33" tire w/ 3.55 gear FEELS LIKE 3.05 gear keeping the SAME gears in the axle.
Read carefully and think before you open your mouth and put your foot in it , a$$hOlE.
