The nut does rotate counterclockwise. You take it off just like you are loosening it. To keep the pulley from moving I used a strap wrench on my truck but you may need to get a clutch fan removal tool from autozone. I hear this makes the job much easier. Just make sure that when the fan is ready to come off you hold it good because it is pretty heavy.

yea, don't even search the archives, no'one has ever asked this question before!--NOT

Yadda, yadda, jump thru all the hoops,

Or,

just stick a phillips Screwdriver thru one of the holes in the pulley, put it against the water pump housing, and turn the nut.

Or, do it the hard, expensive, time consuming way!

Took me about 1.5 hrs to figure out how to get that thing off. I tryed putting more tension on the belt tensioner ...didnt work. I tryed sticking a big chunk of rubber between the belt and the pulley ... didnt work.
The screwdriver trick didnt work because the hole in the pulley is too close to the fan to get a good length screwdriver in there.
Heres what I did ...

I drilled a hole at the end of a skinny board that was about 16" long and put an Allen key in the hole. The Allen key was "L" shaped. The key was sticking out the other side about 1/4". Like a board with a nail it type thing. I put the "peg" that was sticking out 1/4" in one of the holes in the pulley and braced the board against the frame down on the passenger side.

If you can picture that. LOL

The nut cracked loose easily.

The screwdriver trick worked for me. Took awhile to find the right length and the right position to put it in, but when I did it worked OK.

Texas Todd, this site would be a much better place if people like you would stop acting like a-holes and try to help each other out.

We're all in this together.

I get sick of every other post I read from someone looking for some advice somebody has to act like an ass.

AND, I did answer his question.

LOL, if you would have spent about 5minutes on the search, you would have learned hoe to take that fan off.

OH, first I learned to weld, then I welded a rod....took me a year to get it off.LOL

I just did this yesterday. I removed the belt & used one of those Craftsman strap wrenches to hold the pulley. Easy.

Autozone only had a wrench for Fords or something when I had to do mine.

Since I was switching out my water pump I just took the whole assembally off and brought it to the Dodge Dealer. They had obviously seen this before because they took the clutch assembally off the pump for free.

I placed a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator so it would not get nicked by the blades. I lifted the fan, pump, clutch and shroud out at one time.

Good luck!

I found another easy way to take it off (by searching on this board, btw!). Take a big screwdriver and place the blade on the very left edge of the nut. Give it a good whack with a rubber mallet. It may take a few shots, but it will knock the nut loose. Then, just spin the fan counter-clockwise and it'll come right off.

Mechanic at work had two open end wrenches, one was one size too small, the other one size too big. I put the oversized wrench on the nut(it was loose but fit)and wacked it a couple of times with the smaller wrench, came right off.

The site should have a tips and techniques section for specific "how too" $hit. then people could check that first instead of going through all the searching. I love this site, but it is here to help all of us out, not to rag on everyone.

I looked at this thread because I was curious to find out about removing the clutch fan. While I did find out a lot, there are 10 posts (go ahead and count) that have nothing to do with the topic. And yes, I know, this is just one more. Yes, Todd may have been a little bit of an ass, but he still did give his advice to help. Maybe he just thought he was joking around, so people need to chill out. Its really not a big deal, and there is no real reason to turn around and start ragging on him. Doesn't it sound kinda stupid to do the same thing you say someone else is doing wrong. I normally wouldn't get involved in this kind of bickering, but this is just bull$h!t.

Thanks Ddog, dkr, jeremiah, and others,

I NEVER cussed anyone, even anonymously. But wow, I sure got it back, huh.

I did give him a great answer, and technique for the task, and never cussed him or spoke of his, or anyone elses ancestral heritage.

There sure are alot of scatological remarks, from alot of anonymous characters.

And as far as the state I reside in goes, well, there are some other nice places too. Maybe just not where you are though.

If you're not getting a scratch in 3rd gear, keep modding!

Dudes, I'm gettin a "scratch" (hehehe) in 4th in my 01 5 spd 4.7 CC.

I took mine to a shop and the dude took a big punch and a dead-blow 5 lb. hammer and just knocked on the right side to make it spin counterclockwise, that took like 4 good knocks and she was loose.
My last girl only took like 3, but both were free so who's countin ;)

Dude, you can rent one for like free.....
Just do what I said and it'll work.....
Even channel-locks will work once you have it loose.

I just unbolted the fan from the clutch and put the clutch back on by itself.
I'm not sure if that pulley will stay on without the big nut on it but I just didn't want to risk it flyin off while she was runnin. I'm sure the full gain is when you take the rotating mass of the clutch away too.

Anybody know if you can leave the clutch and the big nut off without the pulley coming off?

Hey there,

kinda like de ja vu (sp?) here. LOL

As has been posted over 2 yrs ago,

the pulley is pressed on the shaft at the factory,
IT WON'T COME OFF

Mr. H,
You're right, the real benefit from this free mod is to get rid of the rotating mass, the clutch is pretty heavy, kinda gives the motor a 'flywheel' effect.
I get a kick out of all these people doing all this unecessary work, for nothing really.

I used a small pipe wrench, put a small piece of a board on it, and hit it with my hammer.
Thus, the correct size wrench is not needed, as has been said here on this thread.
