I have a 97 5 spd 5.2L, I've heard that you only need to start in 1st gear if you are towing, but I've also been told that you always start in 1st or you will fug things up. Is it ok to start in 2nd, because it is slow as hell when getting going in 1st.

No, the gearing is probably high enough to where you wont be hurting anything. Now if you were lugging the engine trying to do it, then that's bad.

My old truck i always started in second for the first clutch (32500 mi)... then after taht I started to start only in forst and it then started to pop out of 2nd if i tried to start in it...

Now i always start in first...

i have the same truck. I always start in second. the
gearing is prolly the 3.98's so you're fine with the 2nd
gear start.
