ok guys, im going to swap the stock muffler for the flowmaster 40 i picked up.
i was going to do it myself, so i unbolted the clamps, and hangers. and the POS would not come off. the clamps put grooves in the pipe, and they wont come apart. i had no patience so i said screw doing it myself.
so i go to the local suspension, exaust place. and guess how much they want to do it????????
they want $170 CND just to cut the old one off, put the flowmaster on, put an extension piece to make it fit, and clamp or weld it up.
im sorry, but that is rediculous. how much do you think it should cost????

Have you got a friend that owns a sawzall ??
Just cut the pipes off right up next to the muffler then take a chisel and knock the part that is crimped on off, I farted around for 3 hrs tring to save my factory muffler (why i don't know)when I took this approch I was done in any hour.
NOTE: you may need to stop at your local auto parts store for clamps and a piece of stright pipe 2.5" in / out if you think you need them

Here is anoth3er point, I am thinking of going this route, but teh factory exhaust is SS right? SO where can you get a piece of SS patch pipe and SS clamps? The clamps aren't a problem as they are cheap and easy to change but the pipe I worry about...

Got quoted the same ridiculous price by Mineke Mufflers. Called to price them cutting my old on out and welding in the Flow-40 I waas providing and they wanted $180 also. Almost wonder what they would have wanted if they provided the muffler?

I got mine done at Midas for $40. I had the old one taken off and a flowmaster 40 put on. No extension or anything was needed. I have a '99 R/T

i got ass-rammed with no lube for $200 to buy a flowmaster 40 and install...go to a non-nationwide shop, preferable some hole in the wall...theyll do it cheaper...and they do a decent job welding em up.. good luck.

I just had a High performance cat and the 40 series put on my truck about 3 months ago. It cost me $375 for that parts and labor (including Cat and Muffler)
They did it in about 3 hours and it still sounds and works great. I git it done in a small hole in the wall place where I live. They did a really smooth job.
This was done on a 98 2.5l though. Anything to help power!

average shop price is 30-40$ at the most. heck its 2 cuts and 2 welds. for 200$ the guy better be installing a 3 inch muffler back pipe also

Find a local shop that does mufflers (they are everywhere) and ask them personally. Don't call, just stop in and ask. I went to a local shop and had a FloPro installed for $100. That included muffler and labor. I later had them cut out the floPro and install an MBRP from Jonas. I was out the door for $40.

How does the Flowmaster 40 sound? I want a deep sound and not raspy. Did everyone order a 2.5 in and a 2.5 out and just run a single 2.5" tailpipe?

Im having the same problem. Ive been quoted $170 - $180 for a flow 50 installed. I figured he11, I can buy a cheap spin off for $30- $40 and just clamp the thing.
So I head off to the local parts stores. Well, no one in this area knows what hes talking about or even gives a damn. You either need to own a F body or a 4x4 before anyone will take the time to see what will work.
So far Ive seen a "raptor" at Oriellys for $30 and a "wizard" spin off (which can be uncapped) for $50. Dont know if they will bolt on or even how they sound. BTW will Flowmasters bolt on? Or do they have to be welded?

heres what i did.
i went to the local parts store and got a piece of 2.5" pipe (i think it was about 12" long) with one end opened up. and (1) 2.5" clamp
the flowmaster 40 is a 2.5" center in and 2.5" offset out.
i cut off the stock muffler with a power saw. and the flowmaster fit perfect. it slid right over the stock tail pipe and the extension piece fit perfect over the stock pipe and fit perfectly in the inlet of the flowmaster.
i did it myself in 1.5 hours. i was determined on doing it after getting that quote from the shop. and it only cost me $10 for the pipe and clamp

I had the some worrys about putting a cheap muffler on my 02 quad cab 3.9.I live in ohio and bought this truck in sept and this so called stainless steel is rusting.My muffler pipe is on the outside both on inlet and oulet i was going to get the dremal out and make small slices in muffler pipe and peel back to remove.Also gibson makes stainless and aluminized mufflers that are almost a direct fit perfect length. Will the center in offset outlet fit right in the factory is slightly offset on both sides. Thanks for the help.

I just installed a Flowmaster 50 this past weekend and got the one with the offsets on both ends. The spacing was 4-1/2" between center which is the same as the stock muffler. The length was 23" on the flowmaster end to end and the stock muffler was 26". I had a muffler ship make up a 5" extension from stainless steel. You'll need an extra muffler clamp also.
I would highly recommend getting the stainless steel muffler and extension. Total cost was about $110. The Flowmaster 50 is a little quieter than the 40, but it turned some heads at the gas station when I started it. Perhaps I could make a wav file and post it to my website if anyone is interested.

the 40 i put on is a delta flow. its almost as loud as the original 40's...but hardly any cab drone. its not bad at all

Thank you nitraking for your very insightful and thought provoking comments. I will remove my stainless steel Flowmaster right away before it rusts out or I lose my hearing from the cab drone. You really saved me some grief later down the line.

Hey, great, you got stainless flowmaster, so it will last. This site is full of posts about flowmasters and in cab noise. If you like it? who the hell am I to say different. Hmmmmmm, thought provoking? Isn't that what free speech and internet boards are all about. BTW, your stainless muffler will outlast your OEM pipes, yes, they will rust.
