I will be getting my 01', 4x4, quad cab, 4.7L, 3.55LS next week and need some advice. I will be using the truck as a daily driver and to pull my enclosed motocross trailer (3000 to 3500 pounds). I was looking to gain a little performance and hopefully a little mileage. I was thinking of an intake system, 180 stat, autolite plugs, and maybe a free flowing exhaust from the cat back. Is there an intake system that will work in the winter without worrying about water and snow getting in the engine? I don't want the exhuast to be much louder than stock either. Any suggestions would great. I am new at this "truck mod" thing and don't want to waste money or damage a very expensive truck. Is there a performance chip that would help out in this application. Thanks for any help guys!!

Todd

Todd, The stock 4.7L exhaust system is very effecient as is. I bolted on a Cat back Flowmaster system and gained only 1.9 hp on the dyno. It does sound sweet though. I'd recomend an air-intake system first. Either a homemade system, or a production unit. The 180 tstat works pretty good in the summer, but be careful of cold climate areas, if the ambient temp is below 50, the engine will never reach operating temp, and you'll eventually get a check engine light. I'd recommend the Bosch +4 plugs, they've worked very well for me over the last 10-15K miles. They are pricey though, about $50. Jet Perf. has a "chip" that seems to have decent results. You can also have your trucks computer re-programmed for better performance. I had mine done by Mike Leach & Co. If you do the Jet chip, or the re-program, then you might consider an aftermarket Throttle Body, you'll notice a nice power increase when combining the two.

Yah go with the bosch +4 plugs they are awsome. Big improvment with cold starting and idle even in accel a little bit.

Todd,
I got my dak almost 3 weeks ago (3 weeks this friday.) I pulled my mustang and trailer (4000-4500#) to the track last weekend with it and it did great, stock. It was about 90+ degrees here saturday afternoon. The only negative thing is the rear of my truck squatted down more than I like, so I'm going to get some kind of airbag setup for when I've got it loaded. Only other thing is under hard acceleration it detonated a little bit. I run 87 octane in it, so next time I might put some 89 in it to see how it does. My dad has a 95 Ram with a 360 in it and my 4.7 did just as good as his truck does, but my passengers were alot more comfortable. Tow with OD off unless you are in a VERY flat area. I still got about 13.5mpg according to my overhead console, which is about the same the 360 gets towing, but my 287 gets much better empty.
My 2 cents
