Subject: Roller Rocker adjustment? IP: Logged
Message: I have a question for about the proper way to adjust roller rockers. Do any of you know a method? I have tried tightening them by turning the engine over and tightening the lose ones. Any better methods?

Message: Probably the best way for you to know what cylinder to adjust is; make number one wire post on your distributor. Remove the cap and trace all the spark plug posts on a piece of paper. Mark what cylinder the post is. Place the paper over the rotor button with number one lined up with the mark on the distributor. Turn the motor over till the button lines up with a post on the paper. Adjust that pair of valves. Do this for all cylinders. You should be in good shape. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Message: another way is to pull the plug out of a cylinder... stick your finger over the hole (not in, dont want it to get stuck!)... have a friend crank over the motor.. when you feel the last of the compression escape by your finger, you're on TDC. Now tighten the nut down while twisting the pushrod back and forth with some fingers... when you start to feel resistance STOP. Now tighten the nut 3/4 of a turn with a wrench or 1/2 for a little bit more lift (but will cause some valve train noise in lower rpms). Now tighten down retaining nut.

Message: There are a couple ways, I personally like to set them with the motor running, but DON'T DO THIS. I took another set of valve covers and cut the tops off of them and I use them as splash guards, if you don't do this or somthing equilivant you WILL MAKE A MESS. The other way I set them is to tighten down the nut just until u feel some resistance (nut will spin freely then slight resistance will be felt)or twist push rod with your fingers and tighten down nut until pushrod no longer turns freely, be sure to turn engine over and check to make sure all rockers set the same. Then go back and tighten all the nuts 1/2 turn and set the locks. Just remember 1/2 turn past where pushrod turns freely. If you don't tighten them enough your pushrods will have slop which will cause premature Lifter, Rocker, Pushrod failure and poor engine performance. If you tighten them to much you will risk all of the above and poor lubrication on the top end, but your engine will seem to have more power because u will be seeing more lift at the valve. Some times I would tighten them down and extra 1/4 turn (for that extra couple hundreths) but I wouldn't run it like this for long.

Message: Tightening nut down will give more lift !!!
But be very careful.

Message: I forgot to explain the motor running procedure. Back adjusting nut off slowly while motor is running until tapping is heard then tighten nut down slowly 1/2 turn and set lock. Be VERY VERY CAREFUL. I don't recomend this for the inexperienced.

Message: Thanks Timid,
Thats what I had done was losen them up while its running untill they began to click, then tightened them untill it stopped. I think I still need to give them all a 1/4 turn because they are still noisey.
