I am getting some Power Slot rotors to replace the stock ones. In anyones opinion, what are the best replacement pads to put on your truck?

I have a Durango and am now on my 3rd set of front rotors/pads. Went with the Powerslots and Raybestos Quiet Stops after warping the OEM disks. They warped after a couple thousand miles. I then installed the powerslots with Hawk brake pads and have been thoroughly satisfied. No warp, no squeek and tons of stopping power. Also, very little brake pad dust.

Jay,
Where did you find the Hawk brake pads and about how much were they? How long have you had the Power Slot rotors?

Unless you have done your brake go with ceramic raybesto pads less heat , noise and dust mine came with a lifetime replace against wear

Did the Quiet Stops cause your rotors to warp?

I was almost convinced to get them because of their low dust. I may reconsider if I hear of bad experiences with them.

I went to have my Caravan's rotors turned (only for the second time) and OReily's wouldn't turn them because they were supposedly out of specs. I had to buy some new ones for $44 each.

The Dealer has turned my Dakotas rotors once to get rid of the squealing while it was still under warranty. I wonder if I will be able to get my Daks rotors turned again or if they will be out of specs?

I never really thought about it much, but it makes a lot of difference in the way they turn your rotors. I'll bet a lot of guys that do it really don't care about saving as much of the rotor thickness as possible. It's a lot faster to "turn" off a lot of metal so that only one pass has to be made.

No offense guys, I just don't like to spend money on anything except performance mods.

There are many brands and types of brake pads and rotors out there but there are only a handful of actual companies that actually "manufacture" pads and rotors. We buy literally thousands of sets of pads and rotors every year (I am the parts manager for a large Gov't fleet operation) and I can tell you that there is one single component critical for stopping your truck...Friction...which generates consideriable heat. More friction=more stopping power=more heat. High metallic content pads will do a better job in this department, we have found the better metallic pads (Carbon metallic, Bendix Titanium metallic, Raybestos Super Stop and Super Duty) do the best overall job in abusive (read police and emargency) environments. We have some of the Dodge trucks and Durango's in our police fleets also. We have tried the ceramic pads and they do dust less and stop good (overall) but they also do not appear to have the same heat transfer capabilities that the other pads have (read not as fade resistant)We also tested rotors (raybestos makes a line of performance rotors also)and found little difference in the drilled and slotted performance rotors (Performance Friction, Raybestos and a few others)to a good high quality replacement (read higher surface hardness or brinell) rotor (read not made in mexico or china)We have 3 sets of test rotors and pads from Raybestos that have over 40K on them in a police environment and vehicle stops without pedal pulsation and the pads are at about 30% thickness, we expect replacement at 45-48K. This may not sound like a lot of miles but the avg police vehicle requires pad replacement at around 28-32K miles. If buying rotors and pads make sure you are buying the premium rotor (performance rotors optional) and a good grade of metallic pads. Many companies (raybestos included) make competitive lines of product to compete with the "shaks" that have popped up everywhere. Make sure you are getting the premium product and don't turn your rotors more than once if you want good pad life and less warpage.

Dakaty, if you don't think of brakes as a performance item, then you need to quit buying performance parts. What's the piint of making you rtruck fast if you can't stop?? Flat out, the stock rotors suck. Also, don't get the ceramic pads as they will actually retain more heat and cause rotors to warp and crack sooner/more often than normal. As mentioned above, and good set of semi-metalic pads will be your best option, and a good set of the rotors of your choice. Personally, I am using the RotoTech slotted and cross drilled rotors(made in Canada) and there was a noticable increase in stopping power over factory, and have never had any signs of brake fade with them either.

One of the main reasons metallic pads work best is heat transfer. If a pad retains too much heat that area on the rotor will cool substantially slower than the rest of the rotor after the vehicle comes to a stop. This will eventually lead to warpage. Some of the performance rotors that are slotted or have holes do perform better up to a point. The holes allow better cooling but they also reduce surface area because the metal removed is no longer available for clamping force thus the force applied to the rest of the rotor is greater resulting in better "feel". Our tests indicate that stopping distance is not greatly improved and in fact increases as the rotors get heat soaked from excessive stops. This will probably not be an issue for most folks as they do not drive their vehicles in police duty. The moral is to buy quality and remember that brakes are the most important "performance" item on your truck!

This was directed to the guys that take too much metal off the rotors when they turn them.

Going 60 to 0 is at least as important as going 0 to 60.
