Will installing the 180 T-stat and colder Autolite plugs reduce my gas mileage? I would like to gain performance (to use when needed) but not at the expense of lower mileage every day. For those that have done it - what did you notice?

180 t-stat and plugs will do nothing but help your gas mileage/performance. dont expect to be thrown back in your seat, but it will help you out a little...good luck.

If you're experiencing pinging under light throttle, you may gain a bit of a milage improvement by going that route.

I went to the Autolite 3923s and the 180 degree Tstat, and noticed improved driveability, and a total elimination of ping, on my '99 5.2 CC auto.

I then tried the KRC timing advance mod, whiich involves modifying the crank sensor's mounting ears, and even with the timing adavanced to the max setting, I can still run 87 octane with no pinging.

I believe the timing advance mod gave me a slight improvement, to the tune of .3-.5 mpg overall, while the plugs and Tstat probably did little, if anything, by themselves, other then improve drivability.

No pinging on the 2003 4.7 4x4 with 87 gas. If the mod gives me same mileage plus a little more performance, I'll do it, however, worse fuel enconomy is not an option. Appreciate the straight scoop and advice.

i put in the 180 t-stat and bosch plat +4-4418s removed clutch fan and installed flexalite thermostatic switch (clutch fan going back on in summer towing 4000#s on wknds)using amsoil sythetic oil(at 10k everything will be amsoil) 360 airintakez kool shot on the way.

went from a horrid 13-14 mpg to 15-17 mpg in mixed driving. after 13-14,15 is great after kool shot and switching completely over to syntheyics if i could average 16 i would be very happy.

I don't think you will notice a loss of mileage. I did the mods on my '02 4.7, and I didn't really notice much of anything- power or mileage. It just makes it a little better compared to the guy in the lane next to you in the same temperature conditions. I have changed out the stat and plugs on my last three dakotas. Just one of those cheap things that is worth it. You will only actually run 10-15 degrees cooler before the engine reaches operating temperature, which is above 180 anyway. The 180 stat opens sooner than the 195, and keeps your engine (maybe) 3-5 degrees cooler on a normal 80 degree day. This isn't enough to affect your gas mileage. On a normal 120 degree day here in Phoenix, it does even less.
