Subject: Magnaflow Muffler - Which One??? IP: Logged
Message: I have decided to have a stainless steel Magnaflow installed (muffler only). No muffler shop in the area carries Magnaflow so I must order over the internet. I want a single in - single out.
I have a 2000, 4.7L, auto, CC. I will be retaining the stock 2.5" pipes.
Magnaflow makes mufflers in a 4" X 9" - 14" long body, and a 5" X 11" - 18" long body.
Some of you have Magnaflows already installed. Which one should I order? - give the part number please, as some are offset and some aren't. If part number unknown tell me body size and whether center in, offset out, or . . .
Any assistance with this will be appreciated.

Message: #14256 single in/out. Its a 5x8 oval body. Thats the one I got from truckperformance.com for about $100. I suggest a carsound 2.5 in/out free-flow cat as well. They compliment each other nicely.

Message: Thanks, Craig. A fellow on eBay is selling Carsound cats in several sizes, including 2.5" in/out, for $49.99. A good price?
Also, if I change the rear cat converter - I think that is the one we are talking about (is there more than one?) - would I have to deal with an air sensor?
Thanks,
MD

Message: You may only have 1 cat. Most of the '00's did. There will be an 02 sensor. I had mine done by a friend of mine. Most places won't charge you much at all to have it put on. $49.99 is an excellent price. I paid $90 for mine.

Message: Is the 5x8 pretty loud? I will be getting a magnaflow this summer, and want something kinda loud, but not annoying on the highway. I've got a friend with a 5x11 on a jeep and it is loud when he stomps it, but not too bad at cruise. Just wondering how much different the smaller one sounds.

Message: You definitely hear it more when you get on it. But it is considered one of the quieter mufflers. Not as quiet as Gibson though. Its not annoying on the highway at all. It made my 4.7L just sound like a good mellow V8. Its not overkill.

Message: Craig - a footnote on the Carsound cat - I pinned the guy on eBay down. Come to find out, he was selling one without the O2 hookup. The correct model for me would run $95 shipped. Not too bad, I suppose.
Thanks for your help.

Message: MD, in case you're interested, I've got a Magnaflow #14256 stainless muffler in my garage. I had it on my 3.9 V6 for about 300 miles, but took it off because it made my V6 sound too ricey, IMO. But, it wasn't the muffler's fault, as I soon discovered that every performance muffler on a V6 sounds crappy. I'd love to hear it on a V8, and wish that I had the opportunity with my own truck. The muffler itself is very high quality, and is a work of art, as mufflers go. I'd be willing to sell it for $50 + shipping...I paid over $100 for it. It's got a little welding flash on the ends where they cut it off, but is in good shape. Email me at lfavand@swbell.net if you're interested.
