Subject: Think I messed it up... IP: Logged
Message: Well,
I tried to relocate my IAT sensor, but I think I moved the wrong plug (I think I moved the temperature gauge wire) and my truck won't start now after I drove it home earlier. I made a homebrew air intake and was planning on relocating the IAT into it. So I researched these posts and found the gray cap connected to brass piece that was screwed into the block close to the front of the engine with two wires coming out if it (by the way, I have a 2001 4.7) that I assumed was the IAT sensor. I drilled a hole in my intake, screwed the brass piece into the PVC, and put a pipe plug into the hole. I cranked it up, let it run a few seconds, shut it off for about 30 min., and then drove the 30 min trip home no problems. Did notice my temp guage never moved off of C (where I got my assumption of which sensor I moved). Got out of truck for 5 min. at home, went back to go study with a friend and truck wouldn't crank. My questions are am I right on which sensor I moved (temp guage), did I mess up anything, can I just put the sensor back without any trouble, and where is the dang IAT sensor???? Tell me what color the wires are and that might help. I think I may have found it on the driver's side going into a metal copper-looking pipe? Sorry for the long post and many questions, just VERY frustrated and want a fast truck without too many problems.
Thanks for any feedback,
Jason

Message: ummm i dont have a 4.7, at this point i think i would rather have one. anyway, i would simply retrace your steps and switch the wires that you removed..that might alleviate the problems, also reset your pcm when you do so (pull the neg. batt. cable and turn the ignition to the start position for 10 seconds and return the battery cable)...hope this helps.

Message: I switched the wires back to the engine and the plug into the hole in my air intake and my truck runs fine now (as far as I can tell). But I still want to relocate my IAT sensor. I want to get as much power as possible before I get into major (expensive) mods so if anyone with the 4.7 can tell me where the wires are I'd appreciate it.

Message: The IAT sensor in the 4.7 is in the plastic intake manifold on the drivers side.

Message: It sounds like you moved the temp sensor for the engine. The temp sensor it toward the front of the 4.7 and the IAT is about 2/3rd of the length of the intake back to the right of the TB, it measures into the #5 cylinder I believe.

Message: First off, what year truck do you have? Some late model 4.7L's have the IAT in a different spot than the earlier ones (IIRC). If it's like the earlier setups, then the IAT is on the left hand side of the composite intake by the throttle body (top of engine, left hand side).

Message: As you figured out, you moved the wrong one.
It's on top of the intake manifold, drivers side, as has already been said, on the 2001 4.7.

Message: Ok, I got it. Thanks for all the responses. I'll probably do this mod over spring break when I change my spark plugs and t-stat. Again thanks for the info.

Message: I was wondering if any one knows where iat is on a 2001 dakota 5.9 and do those "chips" they sell on ebay work?

Message: all those "chips" do is tell the computer to add more fuel into the engine...that's it. you'll burn more fuel much faster, and maybe strain the engine because of the new load.
