Message: Please tell me I wasn't hearing things. I was watching speed vision, when they had a blurb with a Mopar Rep telling about a Mopar setup to allow a bolt in easy do it hemi conversion of the Dakota.
He said the Dakota was picked because of the solid frame and good looks.
They showed a frame assembly which included Hemi crate motor 500 cu 620 HP, heavy duty trans and locker rear axle with beefy springs.
Anyone else hear about this?
Where and when can I start?

Message: You heard right, it is a crate setup from Mopar Performance, and it $5000.00, you give them all the info on your Dak no older than 5 years and it is a direct bolt in in your garage with simple tools and you have a street/strip rippin hemi. They send you the complete kit from spings to engine and you wrench away. Speed Vision

Message: The 528cid Hemi crate engine (http://www.mopar.com/m_perf_parts_product_part.jsp?categoryID=16369&itemID=824) can be ordered through any Dodge dealer with a parts dept -- just give them the part number. I'm not sure of its price, but the 426 Hemi costs $2145, the 380HP 360 Magnum a little better than $8000, and the aluminum Viper V10 rings in at $15K.
The problem I have is the 90 day warranty I'd be trading in exchange for 3 years!

Message: No way a crate 426 HEMI only costs $2145. It's more like $10,000 for a all iron version much more for the lightweight ones. The 380 HP magnum 360 also does not cost anywhere near $8000, more like under $4000. I'm not sure where you all are getting prices just look at some of the ads in Mopar Muscle or High Performance Mopar.

Message: Michael Davies Dodge in Ottawa - gave them the part numbers straight off of Mopar's site, he entered them in the 'Dodge Computer', and that's where the numbers come from. I thought it was ironic that this discussion came up the day after I had inquired about the prices. I'd seen the 'Hot Rod Hemi Dakota' on the Power Tour a while ago, and have been pondering ever since. When they told me the numbers, I thought they were wacked, too; but hey, computers never screw up! ;)
BTW, '03 Dakota RT will have a 5.7L Hemi.

Message: Those Hemi prices may be for the bare block only, no heads, or internals, then the price may be about right. I don't know why the 380 HP crate 360 would come up that high, maybe that's how high retail actually is on it. The viper price seems right on. Plus those prices I assume are in CDN dollars which would be lower in US.

Message: quote from Mopar.com:
P5249667 - 426 Hemi Crate Motor
"...Features include a cast iron block with cross bolted mains, cast iron heads, a 278° .495"/.480" lift hydraulic cam, forged pistons (9:1 compression ratio), a 4 bbl dual plane M1® intake manifold, 3.75" stroke forged crankshaft, 4.25" bore and double roller timing chain and sprockets. Stainless steel valves are 2.25" intake and 1.94" exhaust and include heavy duty single valve springs and umbrella valve seals. Chrome valve covers and a chrome front cover dress up this impressive new Hemi Crate Motor. And you even get Mopar Performance Parts' precise electronic distributor for maximum performance."
Give a Canadian Dodge dealer that part number, and he'll tell you $2145 CDN.

Message: No problem, at least you saved me the trip down to Dodge to order one! I have a air grabber hood in the garage for a 71 Hemi Roadrunner, for $2000 I would have picked up the Hemi to go under it. Then who knows, maybe someday I'd find the rest of the car!
Speaking of that hood I'll need to see if it could be modified to bolt onto a Dakota hood. It basically is a fiberglass peice that bolts on to the steel Satillite hood of 1971. It needs to be a basically flat and pretty long hood for it to fit without some trimming. It almost would have gone on my Grand Cherokee but I would have had to cut off about 4" on the back of the scoop's base. I bet the Dakota hood is at least 4 longer and then it may go on without cutting it. IMO the airgrabber hoods of 70 and 71 are cooler then the shaker style. It would also be pretty unique.

Message: This is an excerpt from www.car-truck.com, if you are interested.
After last week's column on the new 5.7 liter HEMI that will be used in the 2003 I received several letters from readers wondering if the new engine will be used in the Dakota and Durango. The good news is that the next generation Dakota, codenamed NB, will in-fact be available with the new engine when the truck makes its debut in either model year 2004 or 2005.
The new 3.7 liter V6 and the 4.7 liter V8 will be the primary engines for the next Dakota. The 5.7 will only be available in limited quantities with the Dakota R/T bing the primary recipient. The NB won't be the only truck getting the HEMI.
The next generation Durango, codenamed HB, will also be getting the hot new engine. The HB is definitely scheduled for launch in model year 2004. The good news is that the HEMI will have wider availability in the Durango.
As previously reported, both of these new trucks will feature styling based on the popular Power Wagon concept or more accurately on the 2001 Power Box concept unveiled this past January at the LA Auto Show.
Both vehicles will have longer wheelbases (approximately 10 inches) but will retain the same basic outside dimensions as the current model. Interior space will be increased on both. The next Durango will have 24 percent more interior space than the current model and Durango and will be capable of seating eight. Backseats will fold flush into the rear cargo floor for increased space. With the rear seats folded flat, the overall cargo length will be seven feet, which one foot more than in current Durango.

Message: Troy Trepanier of Rad Rides, Inc. got the body to fit back on that particular Dakota. He also charged Hot Rod about $150,000 to build that truck complete. It didn't exactly fall into the engine bay on the first try. And almost everything under the hood (except the motor itself) was a custom one-off that Troy fabricated in his custom rod shop. Dodge will sell you a kit, but you could probably just buy a freakin' original Hemi Cuda for that kind of money......
