Hey everybody. I just purchased an 03 Dakota R/T. My question is about performance. The truck is a rc with 3.92 gears. It is completely stock. What kind of 1/4 mile times should it run? It seems very sluggish. The truck only has 130 miles on it but it doesn't seem very torquey. I also own a Mustang that run high 11's so I think it may be just me. Thanks for you input.

In stock form, they run anywhere from 15.7 - 15.2 (varies on tune of the vehicle from the factory).

Headers, 50mm TB, 180 degree t'stat, and a better exhaust system will definitely wake up the performance. From there, cam/head combination, roller rockers (either 1.6 or 1.7:1 depending on if you're going to change the cam), and an M1-2BBL intake will also help out in getting the truck into the mid to low 14's. 13-second runs will require some weight reduction and a combination of the above modifications.

If you want to get into the 11's with the Dakota (and that's not an easy feat without a lot of money)...have fun with the Mustang and use the truck as a tow vehicle instead.

Thanks for the info. I'm not looking to make the Dakota run 11's. I bought it because I think they are great looking trucks and I needed an everyday driver. Also, you read my mind I wanted something that could tow the stang. Just wanted an owners experince on what they run stock. I probably won't do many mods to it but it seems high 14's shouldn't be that hard to obtain. Thanks again.

I think that they respond really well to modifications. I have a K&N Gen 2, 52mm TB, 2bbl M1, MP Headers, 3" exhaust, MP torque converter, and 4.56 gears.

Before the gears, I ran a best of 13.866 @ 97.27. I know of a couple of others that are also on the stock heads/cam running faster than that (one just ran 13.3xx). These are all club cabs too. Tony Cellana has his regular cab running low 13's (his best is 13.0x I think).

Last time at the track, there was a CC R/T, stock with an intake, that ran a 15.2 best that night. Same night, I, with my stock with intake 4.7 CC auto, ran a 15.3, but I had the 3.55 gears and open differential. So, you, lil blue rt, can argue all you want, but it comes down TOTALLY to driver, because the trucks are too close to call, I don't care what you think you've seen on the street, this was at the same track, same night, within an hour of each other making our runs.

Might as well agree to disagree, before this turns into a gay flamewar..

HERE are Tony C's mods and timeslip. I think you mistook 13.489 as his. I believe his was the 14.079. Without a TC, there is no way he could get a 1.886 60' time out of the auto, even with the 4.10's. A 1.886 is a HELL of a launch, and a 2.3xx is the norm for our trucks.

I have a 2002 R/T CC. It used to run very consistant 15.4's with nothing but a homemade PVC intake tube and K&N filter and a magnaflow muffler. I removed the spare and tailgate and managed a 15.3

I think I'm the one Waltherone is referring to.

Then I installed 2000 year model Mopar headers, deleted all three cats (simm box) and ran a single 3" exhaust thru a Dynomax super turbo.

That mod alone netted me consistant 14.7's with a best of 14.62 @ 92.84 mph, 2.1 60' on stock RSA's.

Wesley - I'm behind you guy. I know you from Delphi and some other guys who've met you in person. I believe you.

Waltherone - Yes, in stock form they are "close" but with a few simple mods - the R/T walks away. Example - Grady with his exhaust, homemade CAI and HO cams - 14.9 best - and that's even with a manual tranny. I imagine an auto would be a few 10ths slower.

But hey - All V8 Dak's are cool!! ;-)

No nitrous, no supercharger. He has me beat by 1/2 second with the only difference between our trucks being that I don't have 1.7 rr's.
And please, please tell me how I'm full of sh!t! I really want to know.

I just re-read your ever so informative post and I'll list everything for you nice and neat, even the stuff which made no difference.
2001 CC R/T
K&N Gen 2
52mm F&B TB
2bbl M1 w/ large turtle
2000 Mopar headers with cat box
3" cut-out
3" carsound cat

MSD coil
MSD wires
NGK plugs
MP 2400 torque converter
28x11.50x15 Hoosier QTP tires
Gemtop hard tonneau
Street Scene roll pan
Street Scene hidden hitch

It runs consistent 13.90's-14.00's with the only difference coming from the weather. I don't remove any weight for the track besides taking out the loose crap inside the truck and I don't remove sway bars or spring clamps. The night it ran 13.866 it was about 35 degrees. The track is in Erwinville LA, State Capitol Dragway, and the elevation is probably around 10ft.

Any more questions?

He dials in a 13.70 and runs a 13.701. Tom has the timeslip from that race so we'll see the 60' time. Tony's best runs have been: 13.489 @ 99.82.

Heck, i've pulled a 2.01 60' with my 5-Speed!

Don't worry Wesley...we know what TonyC and other R/T's can do. It's primarily up to the driver to really know they're vehicle.

Naw Ginther, I was referring to a young guy that was at the January meet, I think his name was Brandon. Or jason, something like that, he had a black club cab with just an intake and ran the 15.2 THAT same night.

And about grady, I dont know man.. I ran the 15.31 with a 2.46 60', and a 15.37 with a 2.47 60' time, I think if I can get my 60' time down to just a measly little 2.2, 14's are in the bag, and I still only have the intake as a mod. Plus the hacksawed muffler :)

After first time at the track having to launch on open differential with 215/75/15's (and cutting a 2.33 I might add :P ) and then next time at the track still being on the one-wheel-peel, I think the gears and LSD are gonna make a WORLD of difference in my first 60 feet....we will see soon ;)

The next time we all start an argument in here like the raging 4.7 vs 5.9 etc flames...

Or the next time you all complain about being so slow... then just compare to the brief listing below of STOCK 1/4 mile times of new and past vehicles.... I put a seperation at the 15 sec mark. As several 4.7's or 5.9's seem to come very close to that.

You will likely be very pleased when you see the large number of vehicles new and old that cannot even obtain a 15 sec flat run STOCK.

Now those times are believable.

Bernd,

You could put Whit Bazemore in a R/T, and with no stall on the auto tranny, he wouldn't even come close to a 1.88 60' time... So don't say it's the driver.

A 2.01 and a 1.88 is a BIG difference, especially being a 5 speed vs auto. You probably dumped the clutch at 4k, whereas the auto will leave at 1200-1500, tops.

Wes has the 2400 stall and could only manage a 1.9x, and TonyC SOMEHOW managed a 1.88 with the stock TC? RIGHT...

Let me know when you are running again Wes, I'd love to see it and check your intake for any funny lines...
