Message: Not to bash your truck, in general, why in the hell did they make a 4 cyc truck i mean come on. A truck is for what? hauling stuff, if you want a 4 cyc get a car. Save gas, get a honda. Then you can put a big sticker on it and gain 40 hp.

Message: To be at least a little helpful...try working on the suspension some. There aren't alot of things you can do to make it very fast but you can at least make it handle better. Hotchkis anti-sway bars, some tuned shocks, roadmaster active suspension. If you wanted it to handle really well you could give it the hotchkis TVS system and the roadmaster on top of it. I think trucktrenz.com has the best prices on that stuff. Just shoot them and e-mail and tell them what you are looking for. They are pretty responsive and helpful.
As far as engine performance. Replace the stock muffler with a free flowing one. Get a Gibson or Magnaflow #14256 if you don't want loud. Get a free-flow cat. Carsound makes about the best. Get in touch with krcperformance.com about the air intake. I'm pretty sure a couple of cams exist through mopar. Ther are mild I think but hey its something. You may be able to put a 4.0L jeep throttle body on the 2.5L for some extra air. Might want to ask krcperformance.com about that too though i'm not sure about it. I think PPH(positive performance headers) makes a header for the 2.5L jeep that might help you some. If he doesn't have a really long commute to work you could get him some better gears and maybe a posi for the rear end.
With all of those things you should notice a difference in the truck. Don't expect miracles though. Its a 125h.p. engine in a heavy shell. As the parts become available you could lighten the vehicle as well (carbon body panels, etc.)
Good luck!

Message: Oh yeah and aempower.com has an intake for the 2.5L Jeep engine...it may work on the dakota.
ASEchips.com claims a 13 h.p. improvement over stock with their chip. You'd be the first to try it if you got it.
