I have a 99 5.9 auto and this is my problem. The truck runs great in the city and engine sounds and runs fine but the problem is on the highway as your driving the rpm is at about 2300 rpm then out of the blue it starts jumping up and down intermitintly. It does this more when i am using the cruse control but also just when regular driving. I dont know what sets it of but these are what I thought it was and changed. First i thought it was the plugs so i changed them then i changed cap and roter. Then I cleaned the throttle body and IAC plunger. I now am starting to focus on the tranny thinking that it slips and allows for the reving. Other people are telling me that it might be the fuel filter or needs tranny service or injector cleaning. If anyone knows what the hell is going on please explan. Thank you

Try changing the fuel filter and then if that doesn't help, check out the fuel pump. Could be that when the engine starts running faster and trying to pump fuel faster that the filter is a littled clogged and slowing it down, or that the fuel pump is going bad and can't pump the fuel fast enough. Just some thoughts of the top of my head.

It sounds to me like the lock-up torque converter is slipping. I know the old AMC, which uses the old Chrysler 904, had problems with that. If you change the torque converter and didn't flush the cooler lines good enough, you would have the same problem again ral soon.
But NO WAY should that be happening in a two year old vehicle but I never liked the way the overdrive automatics worked. They shift like Chevs!

I had the same problem with my 98 5.2 auto. It mostly did the rpm jump on flat roads under steady throttle with cruise control on or off. Dealer's mechanic even drove it home with a scanner hooked up to it and couldn't get it to act up. Taking a shot in the dark, the mechanic replaced the throttle position sensor, and it solved the problem.

I took it to the dealer and they scanned it and it was a bad throttle position sensor. Thanks deek you really called it.

Had the same problem with my 99 3.9. Changed the transmission output speed sensor, no more problem.

"Jumping up and down?" If you are talking about the tach "Blipping" as if the torque converter is unlocking and locking while on cruise control it could be a bad throttle position sensor. I had 3 dealers and 2 trans fixers tell me I needed a new transmission, 500,000 miles ago.
