Subject: R/T BIG PROBLEM HELP!!! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 5.9 R/T with 18,000 Miles W/Mopar Chip, Cold Air Intake, Pulleys, Catback Exhaust. I just had Mopar headers installed today and the truck ran awesome for a while and I ran into a store leaving the truck running and came out and noticed a real funny noise on the passenger side by the glove box area only inside the truck. It was like a lifter or something is clanging around and makes like a bad bearing noise on the right side by the glove box and it goes with the RPM of the motor until about 1200 RPM then smothes out. If i go outside or under the hood of the truck I hear nothing but if I go to the muffler I can hear a ticking..... Sounds like a valve??? The truck seems to run fine when under way and when I stop at a light its fine for a couple of seconds then the noise starts. So is it the heads?? How could it of happened?? What is the smartest way to do the heads if I have to (1.7 Ported, Or buy new heads)?? Is this common?? How hard are the heads to take off??. Also what is that little pump above the throttle bodie with vacumm hoses going into it its coming on a lot and makes a squelling noise every time, it has a tag on it that says PVAC or something. PLEASE HELP

Message: Sounds like an exhaust leak. Remember headers will need to be retorqued from time to time, especially when they are new! This is normal, retorque the headers when they are cold (like first thing in the morning).

Message: I have further diagnosed it and it is now a constant drivetrain grinding or lashing, its throughout the whole RPM range. Its definetly not a leak i know exactly how they sound its a grinding noise that you can only hear in the truck not outside and its on the passenger side like its coming out of the dash above the glove box.

Message: Finally got it fixed, took it to a local shop thinking that I screwed a valve and they put it on the hoist... 3 things were wrong 1.) A heat shield was rattlling, they cut it off. 2.) The header was hitting the ear of the tranny, so they trimed a little of the tranny ear which is just usless anyway 3.) You were right 2001RT the bolt in the firewall was hitting the headers as well. So i'm happy everything is beutiful again and the headers work awesome. By the way why do you think that hearders would have been just touching the trany?? They are Mopar you would think they would be perfect fit??

Message: What headers did you go with on your 2001. I want to do headers but those damn precats are in the way. Did you remove the precats? If so will u still pass inspection?

Message: Actually I have a 99 so I went with the Mopar headers. Do the 2001's have precats?? I only have one cat on my 99. By the way love what the headers did for the truck it made all my other mods work that much better.

Message: yep, 2001 have precats. Just wondering if I go with full length headers to get rid off the pre cats will it still pass inspections? Also I heard shorty headers wont give you near the gain long tubes will.
