Subject: do i have a blown 'belly pan gasket'? IP: Logged
Message: hey guys, i think i might have a blow belly pan gasket. im burning oil and my oil pressure is erratic..like it drops really low at idle, and will drop off the charts if i brake hard after hard acceleration. where is this stupid gasket, how much is it to buy, and how hard is it to put in?? im having major engine work done in about a month anyway, should i just leave it for now?? will it damage anything?? thanks for any help!

Message: If you are losing oil pressure on braking, you are very low on oil.... time to add a quart or two. You need to check that right now!
If you are having motor work done soon, then just be sure you include the M1.
If you open the TB butterflies and the floor of the intkae manifold (looking down inside) is nasty, greasy, & shiny, then chances are you have blown the pan gasket. But go over to www.fast4x4.net and look for yourself.

Message: The reason you where low on oil was the bellypan. Oil enters the intake though the bellypan, gets picked up and burned in the combustion chamber. No oil leaks will show up, but it will appear to run rich and actually run lean. It "SHOULD" live another month the way it is. Take it easy and use 93 octane gas.

Message: I think I may be having this same problem (99 R/T), my oil pressure went all the way down and my check engine light came on for a moment the other day upon hard breaking so I checked my oil and it was low, it's about 500 miles before my next scheduled oil change. Plus I have recently noticed my exhaust has been extra "rich" lately as well.....
As for the check at www.fast4x4.net, how is this done exactly, does anyone have a pic of the PCV value I need to remove?
Also I read the "how to" at www.fast4x4.net/installs.htm and still don't understand how much work is involved / what needs to be removed to change this, can someone who has done it please explain so if I have to bring it to a shop I won't get ripped on labor charges....
Any help would be gratefully appreciated as you can tell I am not and engine man and do not want this to go for to long. I always change my own oil and brakes, and am somewhat mechanically inclined so should I try the fix or just bring it to a shop?
Thanks

Message: Don't sound the alarms yet...
AFI, you don't have exactly one month until your motor explodes in a ball of oil-soaked flames. I ddrove my V-6 with a busted belly pan gasket for 10's of thousands of miles. Once the weather heats up, though, your motor will begin to ping under heavy acceleration a LOT and there's only so many tricks you can do to alleviate that. One of those tricks is to replace the beer keg with the M-1. If you weren't planning on that, then the next solution is the billet aluminum belly plate and I forget who all sells those.
If an m-1 isn't in the plans, then you need to fix the belly pan soon on the beer keg. If you are planning on boost or nitrous, it's going to harm the motor (quickly) to have oil being sucked in to the combustion process.
2kr^bum, you have to remove the WHOLE intake manifold and replace the gasket that's on the bottom of the manifold. If you don't feel comfotable with the sound of that, you need to go to a shop.

Message: just to let everyone know, chrysler has finally come out with a good fix for the belly pan gasket problem. the new parts from chrysler include a metal gasket and a thicker metal belly pan. i have used the replacement gaskets in the past and none have worked as well as the new mopar parts. the new belly pan plate is like 10-12 dollars and the metal gasket is about the same.

Message: I had to have my intake manifold gasket replaced about 3 months ago because it was damaged, there was a loud knocking/taping noise under heavy acceleration and the diagnostic uncovered that I had blown it..... So guess what, I just read over my invoice and it turns out that I ALREADY HAD THIS DONE!!!!! Right there plain as day, and I'll quote from the invoice "Customer states check at high rpm/high gear knocking and pinging/possible oil loss. Tech finds intake pan gasket failed-remove intake manifold and replace lower PLENUM pan gasket. Replace thermostat and gasket - road test OK"
I also had the throttle body cleaned and a tune up as recommended by them because I was due
But my question is WTF!!!!!!!! What should I do, how can I prove that I'm having the same problem but w/out the knocking noise. That problem went away but now I am having this oil pressure problem and it seems I'm running really rich when I look at the exhaust, and yes slight blue smoke. Last time it cost me almost $550 because my extended warranty only covered some of it ($335).
I don't have another $550 or possibly more to pay for this again, can anyone who knows about this please offer some advise? Should I do the PCV check?
Thanks

Message: Well, usually the dealer or a whatever shop will warranty their own work for 90 days. If it's inside of 90 days from the original repair, then you should be able to get it done again for free.
AFI- Just a basic note: boost + oil in the combustion chambers = 1,2,3 Kaboom!
NOS + oil in the combustion chambers = 1,2,3 Kaboom!
Lay off the bottle unless pistons were included in the "major engine work" that you mentioned. Until you get that gasket fixed, just go easy....

Message: well, i got industrious this past weekend, and fixed the damned thing. was more of a project than i had anticipated, but was not too bad. i took a few pictures along the way, and took a picture of the belly pan gasket itself, in all of its blown splendor. im no master mechanic, but im very happy with how this turned out, and its good to have some performance back..the only problem is i broke the stupid little clip on the kickdown cable, but i just got a new one today from mopar. if anyone needs help doing this repair, feel free to i.m./email me..id be glad to help. thanks for the replies, guys, and keep the shiny side up!
