Subject: 4.56's installed ! IP: Logged
Message: Well after a two month wait, I finally got my gear man to install my 4.56's in my 2002 R/T. He stressed a bare minimum of 500 miles to break in before I get on it good. So driving it home was hard not to gas it. The RPM calculator on Randys Ring&Pinion site says a 400 rpm increase over the stock 3.92's, thats real close, maybe a little less. I was at 2000rpm at 60mph now it sits on 2000 at 50mph. I can definately tell a positive response difference when your cruising and tap on the gas, seems a lot jumpier than before. There is a very small amount of rear end whine when you are slowing down, but nothing that I cant live with. I cant wait to really get on it.

Message: Ill keep everyone up to date on MPG and performance as soon as I hit the 500 mile mark, this might take a while because I dont drive it that often. As far as RPMs go, it sits right on 2600 to 2700 at 70. But I dont drive on the highway that much, so I'm not concerned.
Eric: The install was only $150 (which included a friend of a friend discount) and from the time I drove up in his parking lot to the time I drove off was 5 hours. And that included him going to lunch at the grease monkey cafe.

Message: Xplikt, I don't know about you, but my first gear is almost useless with 3.92's. Smallest little bit of road imperfection and I break traction. Max speed in 1st is like 25mph. I want to get 3.55's and a supercharger. Should be able to do 40mph in 1st. 4.56's just seem pointless to me. They are perfect for an auto truck tho.

Message: first off unless your truck is just a drag truck 4.10's and lower are a huge compromise for the gains. 3.92's are just about perfect for a street/strip action. This is just my opinion.
Also I can not believe that you will only be turning 2600-2700 rpms at 70. I have 3.55's and am turning 2100. but that is also with the 44re which i think has lower gearing than the RT's trans. Could be wrong. With my 45 mile drive to and from work every day I do not think I could afford 4.56's. It already costs me $350 plus a month for my wifes and my gas.
check it out before you do this. I do not think you will be happy.
but if you are more power to ya and good luck!!
Thanks

Message: Eric
That's correct. With my 97, I had to change the speedo. pinion gear. Calculations showed that I would need a 42- or 43-tooth gear depending if I wanted to round down or up. Moot decision anyway. The largest available is 41. This means that my speedo. gauge shows mph that is higher about 1.5 or so mph than the truck is actually going. Better this way than the other :-)

You also have a steeper first gear, 4.10s with the 44re trans would feel the same as the 46re with the 4.56 gear set.

Message: I was sceptical at first with the 4.56's. My truck is my daily driver in the city and I thought the rpm's would be a factor. If you are concerned with 4.56 being too stout for city driving, dont be. Here is what my 2002 R/T tachs at with my new Yukon 4.56's
50mph = 2000
60mph = 2400
70mph = 2700
80mph = 3000
Compared to my stock 3.92's, there is almost exactly a 10mph difference at any given rpm. Example, stock ran 60mph at 2000, now it runs 50mph at 2000. No big deal in revs, but the performance is quite noticable.

Message: Xplikt, let me know what your install costs end up being and where you go. I think I want 4.56 gears in my Ram. I'm running 31" tall tires and have that extra overdrive on the 545rfe so I think it won't be any big deal at all on the highway. It already hits the speed limiter at 105 MPH in 3rd gear at 4400 rpm with the 3.92's and the rev limiter doesn't kick in until almost 6000 rpm! Any of you gear junkies know if you really need new bearings and all when your factory rear end only has about 300 miles on it? Can I get away with a more basic install kit?

Message: Hersbird, you need new bearings if it's 10 miles old. The reason is you destory them -- 9/10 times anways -- when you take the old ones out.
The absolute best price I have been able to find is Montana Motor Sports up here. They do some decent work and I've dealt with them before. They quoted me at $190 for labour. Pierson Performance quoted me at $200 for labour. The cheapest I could find from a good speedshop in Spokane was $250. Most places in any cities (Post Falls, CDA, etc.) all wanted to charge around $280 for it. I know there might be a couple other shops around that'll do it probably for less, but the first two I trust to do it correctly.
Actually, I'm having Pierson Performance do some exhaust work on my RX-7 tomorrow :)

Message: Hersbird: My 2002 R/T had only 4800 miles on it when we did the 4.56s and my gear man only needed the mini install kit which was a crush sleeve, pinion shims and pinion seal. He also had me bring him the axel seals because he said he had to damage the stock ones to get 'em out. They were only $20 bucks for the set and the mini install kit was free with my gears from Randy's. He said there was no reason to replace bearings with low milage. He has been installing gears for 25 years and is said to be the best within 200 miles of me. So far so so good, he set a perfect gear pattern, very very little rear end whine and thats only when you are slowing down from 70mph, radio off, a/c off, windows up, and you are trying to listen for it. (what Im saying is its not noticable, a passenger in the truck would never know)

Message: I want to get 4.56 too. I've seen that it will cost me about $200-$250 for the labor, but how much do the actual gears cost? Should I go to the installer first and let them tell me everything that he'll need? Is there a kit with everything included instead of shopping for all the parts? If so how much should I expect and where can I get them?
I have a 2001 4.7 rc no other mods but a lot planned.

Message: It might be a good idea to check with your mechanic and see what he will need. If you decide to buy gears, I strongly suggest Randy's Ring and Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com). He has every gear imaginable and all install kits with or without bearings. My 4.56's cost $187.00 from Randy and the install kit was free, but that was the minimum kit cause my truck only had 4800 miles on it so need for bearings. You also need axle seals ($20). Since your truck is nearly 2 years old, I'd go ahead and get a full install kit with bearings ($75 to $125). Dont for get the limited slip differential additive if you have a posi-trac rear end. You are looking at $500 bucks for parts and labor

And by the way, about the 4.56 mpg's, dont let anybody scare you. Still the exact same 12 mpg in the city as before, maybe even closer to 13 which is an improvement. I had an old hot rod guy tell me that my mpgs would drop by 2 or 3. Wrong !!!
