Subject: Stroke 2003 R/T? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2003 R/T with 3000 miles on it. The performance is crap. I knew it would be crap before I bought it, but had planned to build up the engine to make it act like it has balls. I was going to wait a while, but I hate driving a slow ass truck and plan to do it now. I have no intention of doing the "petty" crap (IAT, cold air, muffler, etc.), but plan to go all out. Do you think I should stroke the engine it has (402, won't need boring), or pull it, sell it, and stroke a used core (408)? Either way, it's getting stroked. It will be built w/low compression for a blower (paxton). Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

Message: Thanks for the replies. I already have a set of reworked heads (w/2.02's) off of a 318. I also intend to use the M1, 1.7 RR's, and headers from that 318. It will be blown, so I plan to use forged pistons and rods so I can safely run more boost. Since I already have these parts, and plan to strengthen the entire bottom end anyway, should I just sell my 3000 mile stock 360 or use it?

Message: I can probably get another block pretty cheap. I guess I could keep the engine that is in it now, but I would hate to have to store it for years. That is a good idea, though. Would be nice to be able to swap them out in case of one of those "oops, too much boost" problems. 8 hours downtime would be much better than 1 week+.

Message: Well I am going to get this topic a little off subject here as it pisses me off to hear people say their stock performance sucks.
Sucks as compared to WHAT?
My R/T is still on order and I know I will be more than satisfied with the STOCK performance.
What did you expect?
Something running low 13's perhaps?
Let's get something straight on this board...
The STOCK performance of an R/T or for that matter the 4.7 based Daks is not crap.
Granted they wont beat the latest generation firebirds, Camaro's, Mustangs etc.... but did you expect a vehicle weighing 1,000+ Lbs more to?
Dodge did a great job building and promoting this truck, more than we can say for FORD or GM that offer no alternative in the mid sized trucks.
Lets be thankful for what DODGE has created here as an excellent street performer that can be made much much faster if the owners desire!
Sorry had to vent!

Message: I have to say stock R/T power is pretty lame. 4.7s have been known to out-run them.
Face it, its a run of the mill low compression 360. they just could have done alot more with it.
R/T means something to me. But aparently not to dodge. My truck will live up to its name-sake even if I have to dump $4000$ in the motor. I think stock R/Ts give dodge a bad name. I worry I'll loose every time I race someone. Mine won't come back out of the garage untill its a 13 sec. all motor- CHEVY EATn' FORD SH*Tn' MACHINE
Now handeling theres another story, top notch
style kicks ass too.

Message: Read my post again Black. I knew it would be slow when I bought it.
When you get your brand new R/T, and start getting beat by everyone that tries to race you (because they too know you are slow), come back and tell us how good the performance is. If your current/last vehicle was an S10 or similar, you will be very happy with its stock performance. Mine wasn't, and I'm not.
I agree with slow r/t man. They seriously detuned that 360. As for the looks and handling, nothing comes close. That is the reason I bought it. I can't wait to get the 408 finished. Everyone who knows that STOCK r/t's are slow and wants to race will be in for a big surprise.

I want to be faster than the stock 99+ Mustang GT's in the 1/4 (and still be N/A) before I get blown. Then I'm shooting for Lightnings and other exceptionally quick modded vehicles.

I want to beat a few v-8 cars/trucks. I am dead serious- any performance car/truck would eat my truck up and spit on it. If I can get in the 13s all motor I will be happy. Racing s-10s and winning does not count.

Message: 99Dak,
Do it right the first time. Don't waste your money on the small gain mods.
The engine needs either:
A: more compression
or
B: boost
+
C: needs to breathe
Either one you choose, A or B, will likely need new pistons. If you stick with stock boost, you can stick with the stock internals. But stock boost will not get you 13's. If you do tear it down, you might as well stroke it.
Another option is head work to raise compression. If you go this route, you will probably need to pull some timing to prevent detonation. Look at the April edition Hot Rod Mag for some good head tips ($1500 318 buildup, 400hp junkyard jewel).

Message: Good luck. You're comparing an actual 'truck' to a unibody car. We have a frame remember?? To the guy who lost to a civic......get used to it. The import market is stronger than anymarket from the distant past ever was........they're are soooo many parts available that it is quite easy to go quick on those.....they are light to start with. The key to a nice vehicle is not too noisy, but quick and at the same time, reliable too. If you can do this, you've succeeded. That's what's impressive on the street. The days of of difficult starting, poor idle, too much noise, and poor handling are long gone. Build it slow, build it right and keep it streetable so you don't get hassled, that's the trick.

Message: The biggest problem on these trucks is the chassis - Once you get it sorted out and do the basic bolt-on's they run pretty good.
One of the guys in my area thats the local R/T guru has a '99 RC R/T that runs 13.0's@102 with stock heads, cam ,shortblock and the usual bolt-on's and a well sorted out chassis - it's only putting down about 270hp at the wheels also.

Message: Thanks MoparJoe, see, that's what I'm talking about. Work with what you have first and build it slow. Find out what works and what doesn't and in the process you will learn a hell of a lot.....more so than spending big bucks making some builder rich on the hopes that it runs well right away. If you don't learn first to understand, you won't know sh*t when it runs poor. Think about it.........Also, I've been there and done that, I went from 15 stang GT to mid-11 sec n/a stang over a few years....AND !! still streetable thru full exhaust with a little bored over 302 motor (306 c.i)
