Subject: Stock cam part #s for 4.7?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just received my HO cams that I purchased from a fellow board member. However, I'm a little concerned that I (and he) received the correct cams. Here are the part numbers that I can read from these cams:

Short cam:
1413C
171212

Long cam:
1414AB
181092

Those part numbers don't match the Jeep HO cam numbers. The correct part numbers are on the label on the box, however. Did I get the right ones? The last thing I want to do is rip open the valve covers only to find that I'm replacing stock cams with more stock cams!

Can anyone verify these numbers are correct? For all I know, these numbers might be lot numbers and have nothing to do with the part number. Just want to be sure.

Thanks

(paranoid HO cam buyer!)

Those were the numbers on the boxes. But were those stamped on the cams as well?

I don't remember them being stamped on my Ho cams anywhere, was awhile ago though.

When you match the cams up (I know you can't while your stockers are installed), there are obvious physical differences, sutle, but obvious. No, you can't 'see' the difference in the cam lobes, but the retainer sleeves near the front on the cams where it goes in the bearing journals are different, etc.

I think you have the right ones. Did you question the seller? I have bought a few things from people off this forum, and never had a problem. If he tried a switch on you, what a d....

Good luck,
Todd

I don't have a problem with the seller at all. In fact, just the opposite. He gave me a great deal - $120 for both cams, wedge tool, and shipping. However, one of the boxes was torn open during shipping and damaged one of the cams. The seller has been very helpful in dealing with UPS to get the damaged cam replaced. But that is another story!

The reason I was questioning this is because he bought the cams some time ago and never installed them. I don't think he really even opened the box. I want to make sure he got what he ordered, so in turn, I got what I ordered.

I guess I'm just being paranoid. The correct part numbers were on the outside of each box, so I suppose that I'm good to go.

Also, which cam is the longer one? Left or right. The long one was the one that was damaged. Bummer.

Do you see any black marker marks that say HO on the cams? (or part of the HO if they ground the material off). Mine both said HO, but I think the numbers were a little different on the cams themsevles. Could be batch numbers...who knows.

No HO black marks and those part numbers aren't anywhere on the cams.

If I attached a photo of them, would you guys be able to tell if they're the Jeep HOs?

MIne didn't have HO marked on them anywhere.

They were different, and ARE the HO cams however.

As I said, there are physical differences in the sleeves for the stops of the bearing journals, etc.

Andrew, I don't blame you for being curious though. We made the wedge out of wood, and the cams were shipped to my door for $120, from a dodge/jeep dealer. But, the price did almost double now I was told, still a good deal though.

Todd, today $120 for the cams, wedge tool, and shipping is a great deal. From buymopar.com, the price is $225 w/o shipping.

It's unfortunate that UPS damaged one cam during shipping. It's probably going to be a pain in the ass to file a claim and actually get a settlement from UPS. Thankfully the shipper insured the package for $300.

Nice pics, they look like the HO's I put in.

I guess the second pic is showing us the damage?

If you can get it under the insurance, that'd be good.

I'm going to really get it for this one, but, if that's the only damage, and it's only on the end like that, looks as though you could just use fine grit wet emeory cloth and make sure there are no burs, etc., and it should be fine. LIght bulb went on- get the insurance money, paid for the cams-cams now free! It's hard to tell from a pic though, have a trusted machinist take a look at it. It's not bent or anything is it?

Good luck, Todd

While the damage isn't too bad on that one, I'd personally not use it in my engine.

They're not bent. The corner of the box was ripped open and the end of the cam was hanging out. It looks like the box was dropped and dinged the end of the cam.

I was worried about the balance. If I had the burr removed, I'm not sure if that small amount of metal being removed would affect the balance. I'm just leery of installing a damaged part in such a critical portion of the engine.

You have to look at it from a pro/con perspective. If you put it in and it works, then you have, essentially, free cams. If you put it in and it breaks something, or several things, then you better hope the damage isn't over $300. I wouldn't put it in my truck, period.

Like he said, it's your call.

But think about WHERE the blemish is at!

The very end of the cam journal, how much stress/torque do you think is out there on the end like that? I wouldn't be suprised if that didn't even touch the outside of the journal!

IMO, get a non-biased, professional opinion, of just how that could affect anything out there, if it was without any burrs or roughness.

I plan on going the file a claim, get reimbursed by UPS route. If, for some reason, I get screwed by UPS, I'll look into getting it repaired. A friend of mine is a machinist, so he could easily fix it.

So are you guys convinced that I have the correct HO cams?

Has anyone bought the Jeep cams from a dealer in the past month or so?? My local dealer quoted me a price of $154 each. The price gone up that much? I heard of guys buying them for half that price less than a year ago. What gives??

That sounds like a full list price. My local dealer quoted me $125 a month ago (20% off list).
