Message: Cummins man I am telling as well as everyone else here by the looks of it that yes cummins is partially owned by ford, sh*t out of luck there man.
As for dodge switching to detroit diesel that might be a smart move if they did cause I know that the detroit diesel engines way quieter than the cummins and cost no where near as much to maintain

Message: Your wrong, Ford owns zero percent of Cummins. Years ago they did have 10 percent of holdings. But that is not true right now. Also the Common Rail is very quiet, again your wrong. I couldn't care what Diesel Dodge uses, I'm a loyal Mopar person who happens to have a Cummins in his Dodge. Uh oh my Moms mad at me now, She caught me on the computer again, See ya.

Message: I have to give Dodge its credit. The 5.9L is a true industrial engine that has had years of great service. Heck, its used in lots of applications, not just as a PU engine. When it comes to a hard working motor an inline engine will typically outlast a V configured engine. Just look at Fords 300 inline 6, in my opinion as well as others, is Fords best work engine ever. Another one is Chryslers slant 6. Both known to go 250K without being overhauled.
Yes, the Powerstrokes are good solid work engines and may have more power but which one is going to need more attention? If your in the real world (meaning a contractor, etc, not a pencil pusher) the answer is evident. The only thing that makes me nervous about buying a HO mopar would be the trannys, we just don't get along for some reason.
As a true work truck, being a chevy guy, but owning a Dakota, I would have to put my money on Fords. Coming from a large family of contractors Fords just seem to last longer under servere conditions. Not saying their engines are better just the way the trucks are built. A large HVAC company that my Father's plumbing co works with uses powerstrokes. They have been complaining of problems with the reliability of their 7.3s lately. They just bought (last year) 4 new powerstrokes and all but one has been back to the dealer for major work. To be honest with you guys I would prefer the Chevy/Detroit diesel 6.5 actually. My old mans 93 EX cab long box 3/4 ton has one an it has had no major problems at all except for the head gasket that we have to fix this weekend. Not bad for a 10 year old truck with 230K + and people still mistake it for a 65K mile truck!
Just wanted to express my views since we have been using these trucks for what they were built for (not saying that some of you haven't but we all have seen Pencil pushers driving em like they really need em)
Semper Fi guys!

Message: I have to say you are right there marine1 those old 6.2/6.5 TD's out of gm just keep on going, or seem to to, my mom bought a 92 3/4 ton with the 6.2 and she worked the snot out of it, blew the engine at 260k if i remember so they rebuilt it and the 6.5 that is in it now has like about the same on it and it just keeps going

Message: The 6.5L is a 6.2L with lower compression and a turbo and is not a 350 conversion. Just FYI. I have yet to experience a 6.5L fail in a Humvee.

Detroit's old rep is for smoke and noise, but their new engines are soooo much quieter thanks to common rail injection (developed in a joint partnership with mercedes). We run some 4000 series v12's (48 liter-roughly 3000hp 6900 ft-lb) and they get drowned out by the roar of an old 12v92. No smoke either. Also note that the ford doesn't have all those extra revs just to make powerchoke lovers happy it needs that much engine speed to make their "best in class power and torque" Watch a ford with the trashional pull a fifth wheel up a 10% grade and fall away from the cummins he could keep up with on the flats and you'll see what I mean.

I hope that puts to rest the Ownership confusion. As an owner of several service garages and the owner of a 40 ft. Fleetwood Discovery with a Cummins, a Ford F800 with a 5.9 Cummins and a Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins, I can state with accuracy that the Cummins has been the most tempermental engine I have worked with. I have several 6.5 GM diesels which are very underpowered and I also have two Ford F550 with the 7.3 Powerstroke. The Ford Powerstroke is by far the most reliable engine. The problem with the Cummins have been fractured engine blocks and fractured exhaust manifolds. My Discovery has had the most problems. But the most significant problem with Cummins has been Customer Service. They have successfully made me a Powerstroke fan for life. Cummins has cancelled my Insite diagnostic computer software program. Continually given less than accurate advice etc. I would hope that Dodge moves on and it is not with Cummins. One other interesting note is that Cummins is not doing well in the Stock Market and also Fleetwood has left Cummins for Catapiller. Maybe I am not the only one Cummins has marketed away.
