Alex, the short belt shown in the diagram wouldn't work in my application, because I have an added pulley in my application. I will just take the yarn, trace the route the belt will take, and get the measurements that way. OLD SCHOOL junk, it may take me trying a couple of belts, before getting the right one.
If it's not raining here Thursday night, I'm going to yank the fan too. If I take the Dumbo mirrors off, I might pick up 1/2 a sec. ;)

Demon Xanth- don't bet on it. Not too many people need a power steering pump for drag racing.

Message: yeah they fold in, but that doesn't change the fact that they are HUGE and hanging off the side of the truck. They're no big deal, but every little bit counts. I would like to have the smaller mirrors anyways, just for the appeal factor. I'm not toting a 5th wheel, so I don't need the RV looking mirrors.hehe
I'm still debating on trying the "lingerie" air filter I told you about. hehehehehehehehe
Hell, it's worth a shot. Double up on a set of knee highs and strap 'em down.

Yeah the ol' pantyhose trick may be okay. But I'd look at it closely while it's idling. Maybe give it a few test bumps witht he throttle to see how it acts. Don't want a compressor full of nylon!

Message: Alex(if you're the one that poisted that link on the belt, I don't remember now), if the red line is where the shortbelt runs, does that really give enough pressure to turn the water pump enough? Looks like it just barely rubs/brushes against it..

The short belt is plenty tight against the water pump. Trust me.... it's just the illustration that makes it look loose.

Message: Alex, have you measured a shortbelt for the 4.7 that includes the alternator, and only bypasses the power steering?
Just wondering, I just finished doing so with a piece of postage twine (stuff that doesn't stretch) and wound it through the same way your short belt passes, but then after it goes over the A/C pulley, I made it go toward the alternator, across the alternator pully and wrap around it, to go down the alt pulley on the drivers side and onto the water pump pulley like previously done.
That sounds kinda hard to picture, basically I took your short belt path, and just took the section that goes from A/C pulley to the water pump pully, and stretched it so that it wrapped around the top and driverside of the alternator pulley, which will keep things turning in the same direction they already do.
I came out to ~1725mm(67.75 inches), but this is my first time ever doing any belt measuring on a vehicle, how EXACT does it need to be? I imagine the belt tensioner will make up for any slack right? If you have measured before, is that about what you came out with? I want to keep my alternator and reap only the benefits of bypassing the power steering, but need me some measurements first :)
If you know off hand, or if that sounds about right to you, if you could let me know it'd be mucho appreciated..

Message: Brian, it's odd you bring this up. I have talked to several mechanic buddies just this past weekend, all of whom think that my 67,000 mile factory battery is getting too weak to run with no alternator, and that it's messing with my computer....
They looked, and I looked, and I think that your description of your routing sounds like what we all decided on. I have not had time to get to the Pooop Boys and see what matches that description, but if you can come up with a 6-rib belt in that length, or something similar, it should work..... and that way I could roll my window down to get my timeslip. Instead of opening the door like the Super Pro cars.... heeheehee....
If you use Joe's method of averaging the two lengths, you will be safe on belt length, as well. Keep us posted on what you find out and I will be looking too....

Message: Ok I got a 72mm F&B throttle body and i can say that yes, it does a a bunch above 3500 RPMS. My truck pulls pasts 120 now. It has taken almost three years now, but my truck finnally scared me. I reached 120 so quickly that I didnt realize how fast I was going for a second or too.
All of the afore mentioned "hassles" are there though: irreactic idle, whine noise while cruising, pedal vibration, loss of power below 2000 rpms. I definaltly have to re learn my in traffic driving, but overall, it definatly made me faster.

Short belt (no air cleaner): 226.66
short belt and air cleaner: 229.39
The air was cool and the engine was at temp for all runs.

Message: I've noticed that if I dont' let my engine warm up before making the run, it makes DICK for power. Like I made a pull after it had been sitting for about an hour, and it made 201. The next run (about 3 minutes later) it made 231.
I don't think mine likes it cold. It is interesting that you got power back by putting the air filter back in place..... hmmm.....

Message: The air filter in this case is the quick D "big kit" it is a 3" mandrel bent 90 degree tube with a cone K&N on it. I removed the tube and all from the TB instead of jsut the filter from the tube. It sounded wicked but made less power.
Hindsight I should have made a run with the tube in place but no filter.

Interestingly enough, Duner made the best power N/A with the factory box in place on the 68mm TB, and a K&N directly on the side of the factory box. No corrugated tube, no fancy Z-tube, either.....
Oh well....

Message: Alright Alex, and anyone else that wants to know, I got a belt that will bypass ONLY the power steering, it is Kelly Springfield part number 672K6 (6 rib, 1.7M) It's a teeny bit on the long side, but next size down was a 1.6M, which is a 4 inch difference, and I don't think that would have even fit. The tensioner still has a good 1 inch or more play that it can stretch the belt if needed, so it's by no means too big. Also, there is a threaded stud sticking out between the alternator, waterpump, and A/C pulley, I was worried that the belt might not clear that well enough the way I wanted to route it, but it has plenty of clearance. So, there's your new belt :)
Cost 12 bucks, even if it is only 6 HP, that's 2 dollars per HP at the wheels, not bad a gain for a 10 minute part-swap at the track :)
