I was wondering when is it a good idea to switch over to synthetics. I have about 16000 miles on the 4.7 v8 now.. I wanted it to break in right, so should i start now??

Thanks

Now is a great time. That motor should be warmed over by now.

Unless you have exreme driving conditions, you do not NEED synthetic. If you race, pull a trailer, stop n go traffic, high heat environment, then you might need a synthetic. Most folks attempt to go to the extended oil changes with synthetics and manufacturers such as Mobil does not recommend extended oil changes. If you are assuming that your motor will last longer on synthetic in a normal environment, you would be wrong. We see motors in the lab on good dino oils that are still producing good numbers at 250-300,000 miles. The key to good motor life is a good grade of oil and filter and change it often. Most of the better grades of oil will still have TBN's over 5 at 3500 mile changes. If you want a good grade of group III (read semi-synthetic) dino with a good but basic additive package, I would recommend Chevron Supreme which is available at Wallyworld for $1.08 a qt. If you like moly technology and prefer to plate up the motor, I would suggest Castrols GTX, its close to the same price. I would also suggest Puralator filters.

But the funny thing about Mobil is that when Mobil one first came out. They said u could run it 25000 miles before oil change that was back in 70,s when it first came out U could make 5 round trips from LA to New York and back. It was a graphite oil when it was first on the market. Now yrs later they changed there tune
