Subject: Another 4.7 clutch fan thread

Okay, I have dont the searches on the forums, but I'm still unsure of one thing. After I pull the fan, and nut, do I need to put the nut back on. I guess another way to oword this is, after I pull stuff off, does anything need to go back on?

the nut is attatched to the fan clutch. when you pull the fan off the clutch and the nut comes off with it. nothing to put back on. the pulley is pressed on to the shaft of the water pump. there is no way you can put just the nut back on with out the clutch.

Why did you unplug the line presure sensor? Did that actually help your times? I ran slower with mine unplugged...

It's something that does exactly what it's called, and it's on the auto trannies. Look for a connector on yours...

Soda pop,

Just turn the nut with a big wrench, if the pulley slips, usually does, stick a phillips screwdriver thru the holes in the pulley and seat it against the water pump housing, usuall takes a whack of a hammer to break it loose. You don't need a pic. As has been said, the pulley WON'T come off, it's factory pressed on!

Just do it!

Hrm, I know I sound stupid, but I have a big wrench, the pulley slips, but the belt doesn't. I cant see any holes in the pulley(fan pulley, right?) One last thing, I am turning the nut counterclockwise (while looking at the engine bay) is this correct?

hey, demon, i havent had a chance to run the 1/4 with and without the line pressure sensor unplugged, but it does shift harder with it unplugged. with the sensor unplugged, its shoots the line pressure reading to the TCM to 250 psi, which is the DEFAULT setting when the resistance is too low. so the TCM reads that and it shifts harder but actually the line pressure stays rught around 120-150 psi.

Putting it back on takes about 20 secs. turn it back on the nut, the engine rotation will tighten it and keep it tight.

Soda,

O.K., the belt is on the crank pulley, etc. The engine is NOT running when you try and remove the fan/clutch, right? Then the belt won't move, the pulley may slip some, when you turn the large nut.

When I did mine, I whacked it with a hammer(the nut on the fan/clutch), and it popped loose. Some have to hold the pulley though. Use a light, and look closer, there ARE holes, to put a spanner wrench in.

Yes, you turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it!

YOu can do this, really.

I put a short piece of 2x4 (about a foot long) on the end of the wrench, so the hammer wouldn't be close to anything it might damage.

I have seen a post before, I bet people would like to hear about it agian though.

Just an update. Found the holes, stuck in a screwdriver, had my brother hold it, while I tried to turn the nut. Clutch fan is still on.

I had the same troubles until someone on this site said to get one of those Craftsman Strapwreches. So, I did. (I am sure I will need it in the future for other misc. projects around the house). The screwdriver trick just wouldn't work for me as it did for others. I slipped off the belt around the fan pulley and placed the strap wrench around the pulley. Pulled it clockwise while my adjustable wrench was working counter-clockwise. Bada Bing!!

So you put the screwdriver against the WP housing, turned the nut counter-cloclwise, a good tap with a hammer usually does it, and it's still on there?

Just an update, in case anyone cares. Four months later, after three big ass wrenches, two strapwrenches, six bent screwdrivers, and way too much swearing my clutch fan is still on. I swear I'm absolutely stoopid.

wowwwwww lol soda man u may need some help. try my method... those screwdriver methods didnt work for me. get a length of metal wire or maybe even strong fishing line about 5-6 feet long. then stick the wire through one of the holes towards the bottom of the pulley and then tie the wire TIGHTLY to the front sway bar(anti-roll bar). then get the wrench and put it on the nut and tap it with a hammer or something. may have to tap it hard. this worked for me and took like 5 min to do. the first wire i used was too thin and broke so i used a slightly thicker one and it worked fine.

Had to stop at the custom shop I worked in after high school, so I pulled out the air hammer and went to work!!
