Subject: Why am I slow? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 5.2 Regular Cab Dakota Sport with the 3.90's
and a 5 speed. I have BF Goodrich Radial T/A's 275/60/
15's, a homemade intake, and no mufflers. My best time
was a 15.65. Why am I running so slow (in my opinion I
should be faster). I am running in FL so maybe the
humidity or something? Any help is appreciated.

Whats the 60` time ?
you should be a little faster. not much though. maybe 15.2s
you prolly got about 200 hp going to the wheels. Punch that in on a HP/ET calculator

Message: first things first, what do you RPM's do you launch at? what do you shift at? what is your trap speed and 60'? how about trap speed RPM's? do you spin out of the hole or bog down? put some mufflers on tha dak unless you have the other pieces of the combination do run without a full exhaust. id have to say one of the most obvious things is your tires are too tall. try a 26" tire. do you have a timeslip you could email me? upshizblood@hotmail.com

Message: I'm sure having no mufflers hurts your torque while only adding a very minor gain up top where your engine doesn't have much power due to being almost 100% stock. Either throw on some more performance parts or add some back pressure to gain you torque back.

Message: backpressure at full throttle will/could be higher due to having no mufflers if he has the same exhaust diameter. Gas exit velocity & density = TQ. More exit velocity & density = more TQ. A larger TB and a better intake will give him the full gains, but I bet he's maxed out on his relatively stock setup.

Message: I would say your pushing more like 180 at the wheels but anyway, that time is not bad. I agree that your tires slow ya down a bit and the fact that you've reduced back pressure may be killing your torque more than it improves your horses.

Message: I have the Radial T/A's at 275/60/15. They hook up real
well, I dont see why they'd be too tall. I have the stupid
factory 15's. I forgot to mention I have plugs and wires,
not that they do much though.I launched at a little over
idle, maybe 1000 rpm's with little spinning. My trap
speed was about 83 MPH, and a 60' time of about 2.3. I
lost the ttime slip so I dont have the exact times, but my
guess should be really really close.I removed the
factory muffler and didnt do anything else, the cat's pipe
is like 2-3 feet long with a cat in the middle. I didnt
reduce or expand the factory (I believe) 2.5" pipe. Any
other help would be nice, thanks

Message: I'd put a "good set of mufflers" on my truck... but I only need one. Also, how would a muffler do anything to help my cause? it's just more backpressure. Should i get a set of 275-50-15's instead?
thanks again

Message: what compression is your motor? unless you have a higher compression ratio, better flowing heads and a cam to go with it, there is no need to run without a muffler. low comp. motors need backpressure to scavenge the cylinders. if you have the money, get a sticky set of street tires like some M/T ET Streets in a 26-10.50-15 flavor. if your gonna stick with a regular street tire, go with a 265/50/15, easy to find and not that expensive.

Message: I think you got everything. Excpet maybe :
a tuning device of some kind (roe controller , f.a.s.t , uni-chip )
some kind of ram air hood (shaker)
traction bars
gears (4.10 , 4.56)
I think that 2 brl good for what you got now. That 4 brl might cause you to lose alot of low-end.
Now get a NX kit and yer set !

Message: thanks big_torque. i do have a set of traction bars i forgot to mention them. ive also thought about new gears i just didnt know how much it would increase my rpm's cruising at 75 mph. I am going to purchase a new hood i just havent decided on which one yet. i love the shaker hoods and i like the look of the ram air and the cowl hoods just havent decided on what to go with next. my next question is what is a NX kit?

Message: Jason:
Gears will make a considerable performance difference, as far as the RPMs go,you can go to randy's ring and pinion web site and he has a calculator. My R/T with 4.56's runs about 385 rpms higher over stock at any given speed. 4.10's would only make about a 100 diff, which is really not noticable.

Message: Comparing times off a message board is almost useless. As others have stated, not everyone here is 'truthful' about their truck's times. Also, a lot depends on the track itself - you can run 0.5 seconds different ( or more ) at different tracks with the same truck...or at the same track on different days. I thought everyone knew that! BTW, that time doesn't look that far off to me.
The guy runing 26# injectors is wasting his $$$ - a lot of N/A R/T owners tried the 24#ers and went back to stock 19#ers - they ran too rich and lost power with the 24#ers....where'd he get 26#ers anyway?
The guy who says that his new gears give the same 385 rpm increase at any given speed needs to go back to school.....he's so wrong it isn't even funny! :) Here is how to figure it yourself:
New gears/old gears x old rpm = new rpm.
Simple math.....what has happened to our school system?

Message: Don't forget ALTITUDE makes a HUGE difference.
Lower altitude has MORE DENSE AIR.
For an example. When you are used to driving a car in the high country of Arizona which is above 5000 ft altitude, and then you drive down to Phoneix which is near sea level, it feels like you bolted on a BLOWER to your ride!
Serious. It's the difference of almost 1 second 0 to 60 and wheather your tires spin or not.
My friend told me going to parts of Texas where it's low and humid, that his Camero felt like he added a blower compared to back home.
I notice a difference each time I go up to Payson from Phoenix in my stock car. It looses power when I get up there. That sucks.
