How loud is a truck with gibson exhaust? Compare to a flowmaster because thats what I'm used to hearing.
Also, which kit (side single/dual/dual rear) would be best for increasing TQ?
Tks

If you search the archives for Gibson or Flowmaster you will find a link to a site I checked out with sound & vidio bites...(great site) I went with a Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Mello with a good growl. I kept the stock pipes 2.5" for a sleeper look.

How long ago was that link posted. In searching the archives you only get like 5000000 hits on gibson and/or flowmaster.

I have a Gibson exhaust on my 98 s/cab dakota V8 5.2l, and it sounds great. It is a purr at idle ,but when you hit it, you'll fall in love. I have the Single catback 3" with chrome tip and the gibson headers. TQ went way up also!!!

Flowmaster also offers a SUV Performance 50 series muffler, it's not suppose to be any louder (if any) -vs- their Delta Flow 50 and Flowmaster says it flows just a bit better with slightly faster 1/4 times.

Their tech line quoted better HP/TQ numbers than the Gibson tech line for Gibson's 3inch Single Swept Side Exhaust (their best cat-back system for HP/TQ gains) for the 4.7...guess it's all a matter of which tech was the better salesman.

Some folks say with the 2001 3-cat system for the 4.7, the Gibson wasn't as loud or deep enough in sound, that they hoped for...the Gibson is suppose to be the quietest for in cab noise.

For those with the FM SUV Performance 50 series muffler, how load is the buzzing noise in the cab at highway speeds?

Also, any benefit or room, installing a cross-over, balance, or H pipe for a single cat-back muffler with 2 1/4 inch tailpipes (dumping those into 3 inch chrome tips)

Most of the exhaust systems all performance well even if compared to each other on dyno tests. The ultimate decision on which is better is the sound quality (and personal preference).

As for the "H-Pipe", not required unless you are running a true dual-exhaust system. This present other possible problems with the O2 sensors and bottom end performance. Personal recommendation, stick with an aftermarket "Cat-Back" system. They've been R&D'd, tested, and proven to function well on your vehicles.

FWIW, I'm gonna go with the Flowmaster SUV Performance 50 Series 2 1/2 in, dual 2 1/4 out and get a custom job for the rear tailpipes around the spare for my 2001 4.7, my muffler guys says piece of cake, raised his eyebrows when I said I want him to dump the duals into 3 inch chrome tips though...

BTW, I just found out Gibson gives different mufflers when ordering their single or dual outlet setup, for the dual, appears this may be a better flowing muffler with slightly more noise in the cab

Now re: the math on HP/TQ gains, Gibson says for the above you get 8-10 HP and 20 FT/LB Torque, Flowmaster says 7% gains which equals 16.1HP and 19.6 FT/LB of Torque, seems you get both a little low end and mid/high range (aka HP when punching it at highway speed, torque is pretty much already spent taking off and getting to highway speed, right?

Ah, the wonders of advertising!

I own a 2000 Quad cab sport 4x4 with the 4.7L V8.
I installed an Airaid filter charger with a K&N air filter & was impressed with the performance gains. It seemed to stabilize/improve my gas mileage & it has a nice wide open sucking sound too. I also added a 3" Gibson swept side cat-back & didn't notice as much performance gain as the intake mod. It is a little louder than stock & is very pleasing to the ear. If you drive with the rpm around 2000 rpm & the windows down it can be a little annoying(loud)in the cab so I would not recommend the louder mfgs/versions as it can get a little annoying on long highway runs.
