Subject: Anyone had a TPS go bad?

I think my throttle position sensor is bad. When cruising at certain throttle positions, the truck starts bogging down, bucking, and choking. When you touch the gas a little more, it doesn't help much, just makes it worse. If you let off the gas or floor it, it runs fine. (Be carefull putting the pedal to the floor even at higher speeds like 45 because I got sideways but managed to pull out of it.) At idle, it idles fine. If you let the problem persist for a few seconds, then floor it, it takes a little to recover. Almost feels like there is alot of fuel and no spark or not enough spark, but after a second it recovers. It kind of sucks for me because I'm in England I rely on the internet and military postal service for parts so it's a trial and error thing. The truck has 96,000 miles on it and was seriously neglected by the previous owner so I went ahead and ordered a new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, PCV valve, coil and TPS. Hopefully one or all of these fixes the problem. I planned on changing all but the TPS before the problem so I don't mind doing it now. It is in need of a tune-up anyways.

Sorry for the long post. Just thought I would ask/share my experience. I will update if this fixes the problem.

I have a brand new Carsound cat and the MIL light does come on and throw a code for the O2 sensor. But, I have had these bad and only get an erratic idle. I have been meaning to get an 02 sim box to make the problem go away. Even with a new 02 sensor, I may still get a MIL light with the highflow cat. As for the fuel filter, it's located in the tank and not easy to get to. I can't test the fuel pressure without a gauge and by trying to pinch the fuel line, I can tell it has plenty of pressure. I did some more research and apparently this TPS thing is fairly common. I found a Toyota site that described my exact problem and said it too was a TPS sensor. Hopefully, that is the problem, otherwise it might start getting expensive.

I've had one where it caused the RPMs to jump a little while highway crusing. A lot of reports of this on the DOC forum. I've also had another get fried while working on the truck. I really screwed up the way it ran. Bucking, bogging and no OD.

I think I found the problem. Lello, I think you are right. I did even more research and found that this problem can also be an O2 sensor*** or a speedo cable. Since I was getting a MIL light for the O2 sensor, I thought I would try that first. I had assumed that the O2 sensor only told you when your cat was bad. But, it turns out that, yes, it does control air/fuel ratio. I thought I knew this before but someone argued with me (an import tuner guy) about the O2's ability to control A/F ratio. Anyways, I reset the computer and now the problem is gone. The problem has been on and off along with the MIL light but I never put them together because I never noticed them at the exact same time (MIL light came on long before problem) and I refused to believe that would cause it. So, after I fully ops check the O2 sensor with a multimeter to make absolutely sure thats bad, I'm ordering an O2 SIMM from Fastman. Hopefully then, I'll have my truck back!

O2 sensors really should be replaced at 60,000 miles and you're 50% beyond that. That would be the first place I would look. The symptoms match.

If you remove the rear O2 sensor and tie it to the frame, then plug the hole, the mil light will not come back on for cat inefficiancy. I've had mine like that for over a year and no check engine lights.
